New set photos offer glimpse of Winterfell

Some new set pics of Castle Ward have emerged, sent to us by WiC reader Paula. These are some of the best set pics we’ve received to date. They show some very large and detailed sets, augmented by the existing castle and green screens. Parts of the sets are identical to the shots we had from Castle Ward during the pilot shoot and they also match up with some of the footage from the behind-the-scenes video (talking in particular about the direwolf relief). But it looks like they’ve really expanded the whole set to make a sprawling castle courtyard for Winterfell. Follow us after the break to see the pics!

Winter Is Coming: The thing I love about seeing these pics are noticing all the details that you might not even see but for a second on screen. They seem to have made the direwolf sigil very present in Winterfell, with the etching on the wall, the wooden direwolf head on the roof and even a full-blown direwolf statue in the archway. Very cool.

Love the stone wolf in one of the entrances. Not so sure what the wooden one is for, in that shack like thing. I like it but I don’t know what it’d be for.

I too really like the wolf statues in the archway entrances. Love all the details.

And tsk tsk, someone at HBO is slipping… this person pretty much walked all around the sets snapping picture after picture.

I always imagined Winterfell being… well a snowy place, but so far we haven’t scene a lot of snow in the promo or on the set pictures. Is that going to be added afterward or did my imagination run wild while reading the books?

    Jardin17,

Well, they could add a little snow I guess but it definitely won’t look like this.

Man looking at that artwork… I wonder if they are going to go the same route with the castles as they did with the costumes and tone them down and make them more realistic. One area where grrm went wild is definitely the castles and they could look amazing(albeit unrealistic) if the show did them right.

This should help show the folks that were hyperventilating about some of the things they saw in the behind the scenes clips just how “un-done” things look these days before they get fed into post production. While this currently looks like someone that’s a bit slapdash I guarantee once they get to doing CGI and editing it will look like a giant, sprawling castle.

    Vohdre,

Yeah, I’m interested to learn how what things look look like with the before and after photo’s. In HBO’s John Adam’s they sometimes took real building sets and then CGI’ed them to be much bigger and different on TV. It’s hard to say how big they plan on making the castle look. Give from what little we’ve seen from the behind the scenes it does look like they’re leaning more towards ‘historic reality’ as opposed to fantasy.

As most other fans of the series I’m hopping that they do make the castle somewhere as massive as it is in the books(shouldn’t be too hard if they’re willing to spend the money on the CGI), but I guess we’ll see what happens.

I thought that too, but on re-read it was kinda ‘fall’ weather at Winterfell in the beginning. The snow starts very early on though. I hope they do sprinkle snow everywhere eventually, blizzards over time…

I wonder if the Dire wolf statue is in front of the entrance to the crypts. It might make Ned and Robert’s entering seem a little more foreboding if Robert stops for even just a second and kind of stares at it. I think that would be the perfect time to bring up the whole Winter is coming dialogue they have.

It’s like the wolf is guarding the crypts just as down below the old Stark lords are guarded by dire wolves

Exactly! This is HBO they make IMO the best TV out there. The CGI they pull of if fantastic. I don’t think we are going to have to worry about anything. It isn’t going to be graphics a la “Spartacus” they may have had lavish sets, but the CGI was just farts!

I fear somebody at HBO freaking out about these shots and making things both more difficult for the production and more difficult for WiC. Hope not.

They need not worry but it is the nature of big productions to worry and fear that all will be lost of images or secrets get out. Maybe HBO is less afraid of fans?

In the meantime, isn’t it fun to be a fan!?!

The pilot should show a snowless Winterfell, with rare patches starting to show up by the middle of the first season, and more and more snow piling up as the seasons roll on. By the time that Theon returns to Winterfell, it should be covered in snow, but the drifts should pile higher and the icicles grow longer and longer even after that. The amount of snow in Winterfell should be the clearest measure for the viewer of just the extent to which.. Winter is Coming.

@WIC speaking of photos! Couldn’t you or someone update all of the cast photos here with the pics from the trailers??…. On my wish list are pics of Bran(when backstage on the making of video with Arya whom you have a pic of), Cersei(has got a very sarcastic look on her face in one clip from the tournament, turning away from her husband! and blond hair…), Sansa(at the tournament I think), Mark Addy as king…, Theon at the beheading, Viserys, and finally our own Ned looking grim in that clip from the beheading in the 2010-2011 preview on his way to swing down…
Or is there a reason why you haven’t already?

And is that really Jon Snow!?!?!?!?!???? No mistake? I don’t recognize him AT all. What’s with the moustach??? honestly!? I have been kind of quiet about yes/no versus characters/actors to this point but – what happened!? I thought some other guy was our Jon – or what’d I miss…??

    another thing though:
About the direwolf statues on the set, I sure hope they look snarlier and grimmer up close. And sincerley wish they are bigger than they look on the pics.
In my mind I’d want the statues to be chest high – so as to really give an imposing scary impression!
Imagine Baratheon walking past them with Ned on the way to the crypt (if that’s where they are, I’d like them anywhere… on the entrance to the actual castle would be nice as well…) and as someone said, stopped a second and watched… Imagine that but with the direwolfs almost as big as him – the king himself coming eyelevel with the wolf…

Regarding the snow discussion I too always pictured there to be snow around winterfell, even in the beginning of the first book. I believe its mentioned off and on throughout. If I remember correctly during the beheading scene in the book theres a comment like “the snow around the stump drank the blood and turned from white to red” or something like that. And we know the direwolves were found in the snow. I won’t be terribly upset if winterfell isn’t snowy at the beginning, but I would prefer if it were.

I am however a little concerned about the lack of snow around the castle black set. I’ll be disappointed if it’s not snowy and cold at the wall right from the beginning. I feel a little better after seeing the brief shot of Jon in the raven trailer where it’s clearly snowing.

    Karl,

That video has just removed any fear or apprehension I might have had after seeing all the footage that has been released so far. I worried that we wouldn’t get any shots of the dramatic vistas and sprawling castles that I expect to see. I now have faith that we will see things like the true enormity of the wall etc.

I’m a freelance video editor and I watched John Adams, and I’ve got to say I didn’t realise just how much computer generated imagery went into each shot. I’d love to see a similar video for Rome, although I know they actually built a lot of the sets for that one. An issue which may have contributed to the enormous budget.

If Game of Thrones looks a well done as John Adams then I will ecstatic!

As for the snow thing, although in my mind there was snow from the start of the book, HBO have probably decided it better to have it build up. I mean after all their tagline is Winter in Coming not Winter is Already Here and Might Last a While… :P

    Hej Olivia,

Jag tror att jag kan svara dig vad det fotona angår.
The idea is we use the available in-character photos as much as we can, provided they are of good enough quality for the cast-page size. Some unfortunately don’t fit these standards. As for Bran, we are waiting for a serious photo of him. Eventually, however, we want to fill the gallery with official production stills, such as the two featuring Ned and Dany. Hope this helps.

Good point. There SHOULD be snow around the execution trunk and there was none to be found in the scene we saw. Right afterwards Robb and Jon start racing and find the direwolves, definitely in a snowy site. I hope they cgi the whole thing…

Silverjaime, actually Paula said that Castle Ward was open to visitors that day and that there were quite a few people walking around the castle grounds. No Game of Thrones crew were in sight.

I suppose HBO can’t just have them shut down the castle for the entire 30 weeks of filming and they, of course, have to leave the sets up even when they’re not filming. Which means on days the castle is open to the public, people get to have their own private set tours. ;)

The Winterfell set looks great! I like how the Direwolf theme is worked into it; especially the statue at the gate has a dark sense of foreboding to it. This could well be the entrance to the crypts.
I noticed that the lone archway seen in pictures 11 through 14 is not the same as the one seen behind Jaime Lannister and the Kingsguard (#34 in Ran’s sequence on westeros.org). Just saying, because I initially thought, this archway could be the castle gate where the King’s party comes through, but it seems to be another one.
And yeah, CGI will make this great set look truly awesome…

More seriously, it is important that Jon is young, but he does’nt need to be a teenager to fit his role… and I think that aging him up will help the audience identifying with him, I think. HBO aims an adult audience, not a teenage one.

The set looks perfect. It needs to be relatively snow free now, in the beginning so you can see the changes in the future.
The size looks pretty good too. Its not like Winterfell is a gigantic town, more likely an oversized market town. The north is scarcely populated and equal in size to the rest of Westeros.

It will look like real stone that was carved an age past, I have been on some amazing sets before and the illusions the set designers can create from ply wood and foam always blows me away. Hi – inspired by Paula’s photos I trotted down to Castle Ward and to my great excitement they were filming! It’s true – anyone can just wander down past the set and there were people walking dogs and so on, so I wandered into the main courtyard area as if I belonged, and realised that they were filming! A member of the crew said it was ok for me to stay and watch if I was quiet – so I hunkered in behind one of the walls opposite this archway. It was a scene with little Isaac (Bran) and he was inside the arch so I could only see his tunic and legs and he was holding a little bow etc. The poor child must have done the scene 20 times – I was there over an hour – with various adjustments to lights and cameras each time. There was a black tent where Brian Kirk was going in and out along with (I think) David Benioff. It looked like him but I could only take pix when they weren’t facing me – for obvious reasons. There were loads of guys around waiting for them to wrap so they could start taking everything down. Outside there were animal stalls with pigs and goats in – rare breeds. Eventually it was a wrap and Isaac came out looking very cute in his costume! Dark greens and browns mostly and a big puffa coat they put on him – it was cold. The director thanked him and off he went with his people. I only took pics when no-one was looking as I didn’t want to get thrown off the set!
Apparently they’re there tomorrow and maybe Sat or Monday, and then Greyabbey and sometime very soon Tollymore. there are nearly 50 locations roundabout being used! ( Yes I got talking to some of the crew!)
Anyway here’s my pix – if you look close you can see Isaacs little legs!

Nice job silverjaime! Some great info.

Since Isaac is clearly standing in this scene, this has to be a reshoot from the pilot. Did you see Michelle Fairley at all? I’m thinking this might be the scene Catelyn scolds Bran for climbing.

    Winter Is Coming,

Nope – it really looked like all about Bran. He kept having to walk into the building from the archway and obviously something was going on in there, but it seemed to be only himself.

    Hear Me Roar,

No – it’s not on the beaten track, and anyway most of it is quite solid. Also – there are two little houses there which are occupied – one of them is right beside the courtyard (on the right of my pic with the sandbags in it). So maybe they’re acting as janitors!

    I do not think so.

I recall that Julia Frey posted the photo of her with the fake snow-machine.

It could be King s arrival, but I am not sure.

Greyabbey would make a nice sept. Maybe Winterfell’s sept (the one Ned built for Catelyn)? I can’t think of any time it was actually visited in the novel, but Cat mentioned it several times in her chapters. A good way to introduce viewers to the statues of the Seven Gods, given that they will have been introduced to the Old Gods with Ned’s visit to the godswood after executing Gared. Since religion becomes increasingly important to the storyline in the books, it would make a lot of sense.

    Just guessing here, though.

    You are probably right, though.
In fact, I was watching the behiend-the-scenes preview for the 50th time, and I spotted the scene with lots of Baratheon s guards and some fency looking horsemen.
The location does not look like Castle Ward at all.

Silverjamie…”Too old”…No way, I am older than you, and there are loads of characters you could play. It is probably too late now for series one, but come Feb. next year EX.NI should have another registration day open to all. I will have to re-register myself. They do have a lot of people on their books though, and it is still down to luck and availability whether or not you get any work. I have been lucky so far as I have done one day at Ballycarry and have been offered three days next week, not sure where yet…possibly Greyabbey if what you heard today is true…..Its not glamorous like most people think, and it can be a long day . But on a project like this when your a fan ,it is so much fun dressing up and being part of it.

Bran could see himself walking in dreams later in the series, could’nt he ? I don’t remember well, but I think that it happens in the book, when he sees himself in the crypts talking to his father (just before it happens you-know-what to him) or is it me who is dreaming ?

SilverJamie you are unstoppable! I’m glad you’ve been to one of the sets that myself and Two Feathers worked on. At this rate you’ll blag yourself a directing gig on Season 2!!

BTW – As Two Feathers pointed out, Extras NI are looking for all types of people. There were extras in the Tourney who were in their 80s! The only type of people that they don’t want are under 16s and there is another 4 months of filming left and alot more scenes that will need loads of extras so you never know!

Wasn’t there a ruined sept in the end of book 3 where Uncat makes her appearance to hang the Frey (who I can’t remember). I can’t remember exactly but I think that same sept is mentioned in book 1 on the way to the Twins. I need to head over to good ‘ol Tower of the Hand.

I’m a little late to the party in regards this piece of news/info – but did the supplier of these pics confirm that they were all from the Castleward location/set?
The reason I ask is that the last picture in the above list (with the pink GOT sign) is definately taken in Saintfield (a town halfway between Belfast & Castleward) and was pointing up a lane to what I believe is a side entrance to Saintfield Demesne. On the opposite side of the road to that entrance there were a large number of signs both big and small indicating a set for GOT. One of these signs identified it as “LOC2″. I don’t have much info on the Demesne itself but can confirm that there are a number of pieces of woodland around it in in addition to a red-brick style round tower, visible from the road itself (probably not applicable to a GOT’s shoot however).
I drove past the signs each day to & from work, and although now gone and the entrance closed off again, they were in place for a week+.
I see that Saintfield has been mentioned on the tweets this evening as a confirmed location at another fan site, so I thought I’d add in what I knew about it.
Is it possible that some of the other pictures above were also taken at this secondary location and not all from Castleward?

Currently GOT production signs are pointing towards the Newcastle (Tollymore Forest Park) direction when enroute from Belfast… so there’s extra evidence that they are indeed shooting there (tho the snow-filled forestry scene was evidence enough!)
