Liam Cunningham interviewed by Access Hollywood

Another new cast member is speaking about his role in Game of Thrones, this time it is Liam Cunningham who talks with Access Hollywood in two separate interviews about playing Davos Seaworth. They are both great interviews, Liam is a funny guy! Plus he mentions being a fan of the site!

Embedded below are clips from the video interview Liam did at Access Hollywood’s studios, while the write-up from the over-the-phone Q&A (which is where he name-drops us) can be found here. Also Access Hollywood is promising a new interview with a different Thrones cast member each week leading up to the premiere!

(Region-free versions of these videos can be found HERE.)

Winter Is Coming: Liam’s teases of what we can expect from Carice as Mel and Stephen as Stannis have got me so pumped up. I can’t wait to see the three of them interacting on screen. We are in for some stellar acting, no doubt. Oh, and thanks for the shout out, Liam!

I see i’m going to have to start stanning Davos now. Liam is adorable, so happy he’s on the show.

I have a feeling watching these three actors play off one another is going to be the highlight of the season.

“Stanning Davos”? Is that your term for writing Stannis/Davos fanfics? Because I have to tell you, that’s not a cute couple at all…

stile, stanning just means being a huge fan of that person. It’s a portmanteau of the words “stalker” and “fan”.

EDIT: Or it derives from Eminem’s song “Stan” although it’s possible he got that name from combining those two words. Either way, it just means to obsess over someone.

LOL no, it is actually an internet term that means I will be a very devoted fan of Davos.

No, “cute” is not a word that comes to mind when I think of them together in any way, shape, or form. I’m sure the many people who ship them romantically feel the same way.

OMG. He is PERFECT. His accent, ICANT. He’s so funny and adorkable… I can tell he’s going to add a ton of spark to Davos, who to me was a rather dull character in the books.

Are you kidding me?!? Stanvos is endgame.

And for the record “Stanning” means to be a huge fan of something or someone… Personally, I’m a Stannis-Stan. ;)

I’ve got a lot of faith in Liam Cunningham – he was the best thing about the appallingly bad Outcasts (the BBC’s attempt to create an original sci-fi series that isn’t DW or related spin-off…)

Davos is possibly my favourite character and I think he’s in the right hands :)

Quite frankly I’m surprised they even decided to go through the trouble with CGI and gloves and whatnot to make it so he have fingers missing on one hand. I guess they decided they had to do it because learning the reason why Davos is missing the end of his fingers really tells you a lot about the personalty and values of both Davos and Stannis.

    KG:

I’m not really too hurt by it. I think the word ‘nerd’ has really evolved in the in the last 20 or so years to mean something more like obsession. I’ve seen people start to use the word that way, someone can be described or self described as a ‘history nerd’ or a ‘car nerd’ or a ‘political nerd’.

Favorite bit from the transcribed interview:

Access: Stephen Dillane plays Stannis and we’ve seen him looking quite stern in the previews. Is he frightening in that character?

Liam: He’s described in the books as being humorless and dour and stern and Stephen, as a person, is absolutely anything but. He has the driest sense of humor.

This is great because, actually, Stannis himself has this incredible dry sense of humor as well… :)

I watched the interview on mute and I dare say I enjoyed it better than most of you. The interviewer has excellent mute presence. Liam’s quiet confidence seems perfect for the part. Is saying “pirate smuggler” homophobic? I don’t want to say the wrong thing in a public forum.

“Nerd” and “geek” definitely have a less pejorative tint these days, it’s an indicator of being super into something- which we are. “That’s not Davos! I first saw Liam Cunningham’s photo on WiC when the casting announcement was made months and months ago, and I thought the actor looked perfect from the get go. Cunningham looks just like the captain of a working ship. Now hearing him talk, I’m totally sold.

I’ve learned the faces of the Season 2 cast by now, but if I hadn’t, I am wondering if I could have been shown a spread of actor headshots and accurately picked out who was who? I’d like to think I could have. Based only on headshots, in addition to Davos, I think they’re spot on for Brienne, Asha/Yara, Stannis, Edd, Pod, Gilly, Ygritte… as if they couldn’t have possibly chosen anyone else.

He is the perfect Davos. I kind of pictured him in the books a bit different than Liam. But, at first (when I saw the photo of him, when the casting was announced) I was not sure if he could be Davos, but now… I believe that he is Davos.
The only actress that I am still reticent about is Carice Van Houten. The Melisandre that I imagined when I read the books is very different and I believe that Mel is a very complex character. I am expecting very much from Carice Van Houten… But if Liam says that she is good, I am more relaxed about it :)

But the actors are supposed to convey what’s in the script, and not necessarily what’s in the book. Whoa, a whole new level of excitement for the Dragonstone side of the story. I’ve seen Cunningham in many small (and bigger) roles this past year, many purely coincidentally, and he’s a top actor. Seeing this interview, I now know he’s a great guy as well! Love the shout-out.

Drop a line here, Liam, if you have time ;)

Wow Liam’s not just awesome on screen he’s also a really nice guy in real life! I just became an even bigger fan of his. And yes I agree, though I originally thought he’d make a better Stannis than Dillane I now think he makes a better Davos than Stannis. And yes I really like the idea of Dillane as Stannis now. Still wouldn’tve been my first choice but Dillane does have much more of a regal presence than Cunningham. (who is still awesome btw)

    userj,

I would love to hear actor’s reactions after reading book 3, especially those portraying characters involved in TRW. I imagine the actors must be more invested in their characters than the average reader, so I can only imagine how traumatic that will be. (Worse than Ned’s beheading, since Bean only portrayed Ned for 1 season?)
Liam sounds like a great Onion Knight, love these interviews with actors I’m not familiar with (although I’ve seen both Dog Soldiers and Clash/Titans!).

Davos has always been one of my faves. In my head he was all sexy and gorgeous. I was a bit ‘meh’ when this guy was cast, although I knew he looked like Davos in the book (yeah, I know, but who pictures everyone how they are written?). But, if GoT’s Davos is anything like this guy, I take it all back. He is GORGEOUS! Super sexy, and a flirt with a blushing problem is always extra special.

    Andrija Andrew,

Yeah like when he’s all “they call me mr tangent” and she’s all like “Anyway, back to the topic of Game of Thrones”. Or when she says “Now let’s talk about you.. can you tell us more about Fassbender?” Or when he says “You did your homework little girl” and she says “No, the geek producer who loves Game of Thrones behind the camera did.” Grade B interview and I mean that. All interviews should be this light-minded.

Liam Cunningham is so freaking charming, I can’t. I still see him as the dad in A Little Princess, so it’s very weird to be finding him so engaging in this interview. It’s all a little too Oedipal for me, thank you very much. :p (Also, they can go ahead and throw that round-table interview into the Season 1 blu-ray. It won’t be TOO spoilery, I promise.)

Renly: “…I got Margaery. You’ll be pleased to know she came to me a maid.”

    Totally! Here’s some more.

“Robert could piss in a cup and men would call it wine, but I offer them cold clear water and they squint in suspicion and mutter to each other about how queer it tastes.”

    and

“You haggle like a crone with a codfish, Lord Snow. Did Ned Stark father you on some fishwife?”

and about Gilly (2 in one conversation!)

“She’s wanted for her teats, not her tongue. I’ll have more milk from her, and fewer messages.”

“Her own father got this child on her? We are well rid of her, then. I will no suffer such abominations here. This is not King’s Landing.

    XD

As to whether he’s aware of it or not… A) who cares, he’s just as funny either way, and B) I personally think he is. Just because he doesn’t laugh at his own jokes like the cartalk guys doesn’t mean anything…

I think it’ll be even funnier in the show if Stannis is played completely oblivious to anything funny he says, and glares at people who dare to laugh.

Loved his line on “the wrong hand!”
I actually pictured Davos differently but Liam will be perfect in this role. He seems to have done a good bit of research on the character. I’m impressed. Can’t wait to see him interact with Stannis and Mel.

Nice quotes userj—But how the hell do you have those so handy and ready to go? Very impressive.

I agree he’s got a dry sense of humor. And I believe that Stannis does know humor, he just doesn’t find it funny, if that makes sense. I don’t think he’s ever laughed in his life.

Anyway both Dillane and Cunningham seem more handsome than I imagined their characters. Gotta keep the girls watching too I guess. We guys certainly have our share of eye-candy in this show.

To me, that’s the kind of detail only worth applauding when an actor chooses to go against his natural hand for the sake of the story details–it’s not worth being upset when they DON’T. I guess primarily because that’s not the kind of detail that sticks with me when I read. Handedness doesn’t define who you are as a character. So I wouldn’t even remember it, but then when I hear things like “Maisie Williams trained like a crazy person to be able to use the correct hand,” when folks like me wouldn’t have known either way, it just…I think it’s amazing dedication when such a minor detail is that important to them.

I think one would have to be a real jerkweed to get on Cunningham’s case about it. It totally doesn’t matter.

haha… thanks for being impressed. But honestly I only remembered the first one exactly. The other two I looked up in my pdf of aDwD remembering vaguely that Stannis said some funny things in his first two conversations with Jon in that book. He has about one sarcastic/funny line per scene he’s in though so it’s not that hard to find. :)

IA with your perception of Stannis here. Cressen said something like that… he’d never understood jokes the way that other boys did (and in the same way never understood cruelty either). He understands that something is funny but doesn’t really experience joy from it. Rather sad actually.

Anyway both Dillane and Cunningham seem more handsome than I imagined their characters. Gotta keep the girls watching too I guess. We guys certainly have our share of eye-candy in this show.

Oh, I feel like the ladies have been blessed with GoT. I mean the sheer numbers are on our side (there are like 4 male characters for every female of similar significance), and even unattractive male characters are being cast with hot, rugged, sexy beasts, for the most part. @_@

Exactly. It’s not a bad thing when they DON’T switch for a role, but it’s very impressive when they DO…

Although in Arya’s case, her handedness is more central to her character. It makes her a more effective fighter, because it reverses the way people are used to fighting, and it’s also symbolic of how unusual she is in her society. It’s not as big of a deal with Davos.

This came up on another message board, but the more I think about it, the more awesome it would be if the Red Viper were played by…Mandy Patinkin. I mean, the character is already Inigo Montoya, so how cool would it be? Especially in a certain epic fight sequence…

Have you see Mandy Patinkin lately? Sure he’s awesome on Homeland but as the Red Viper….I am skeptical. Besides we had Inigo Montoya in Miltos’ Syrio Forel.

Oded Fehr, James Purefoy, Javier Bardem (never happen), Antonio Banderas…hard to say.

Another possibility given his HBO association and through the possible influence of Oona Chaplin: Dominic West. He could definitely pull off the charisma.
