Another new cast member is speaking about his role in Game of Thrones, this time it is Liam Cunningham who talks with Access Hollywood in two separate interviews about playing Davos Seaworth. They are both great interviews, Liam is a funny guy! Plus he mentions being a fan of the site!
Embedded below are clips from the video interview Liam did at Access Hollywood’s studios, while the write-up from the over-the-phone Q&A (which is where he name-drops us) can be found here. Also Access Hollywood is promising a new interview with a different Thrones cast member each week leading up to the premiere!
(Region-free versions of these videos can be found HERE.)
Winter Is Coming: Liam’s teases of what we can expect from Carice as Mel and Stephen as Stannis have got me so pumped up. I can’t wait to see the three of them interacting on screen. We are in for some stellar acting, no doubt. Oh, and thanks for the shout out, Liam!

I see i’m going to have to start stanning Davos now. Liam is adorable, so happy he’s on the show.
I have a feeling watching these three actors play off one another is going to be the highlight of the season.
TheBullQuote Reply
“Stanning Davos”? Is that your term for writing Stannis/Davos fanfics? Because I have to tell you, that’s not a cute couple at all…
stileQuote Reply
stile, stanning just means being a huge fan of that person. It’s a portmanteau of the words “stalker” and “fan”.
EDIT: Or it derives from Eminem’s song “Stan” although it’s possible he got that name from combining those two words. Either way, it just means to obsess over someone.
Winter Is ComingQuote Reply
LOL no, it is actually an internet term that means I will be a very devoted fan of Davos.
No, “cute” is not a word that comes to mind when I think of them together in any way, shape, or form. I’m sure the many people who ship them romantically feel the same way.
TheBullQuote Reply
OMG. He is PERFECT. His accent, ICANT. He’s so funny and adorkable… I can tell he’s going to add a ton of spark to Davos, who to me was a rather dull character in the books.
Are you kidding me?!? Stanvos is endgame.
And for the record “Stanning” means to be a huge fan of something or someone… Personally, I’m a Stannis-Stan. ;)

I’ve got a lot of faith in Liam Cunningham – he was the best thing about the appallingly bad Outcasts (the BBC’s attempt to create an original sci-fi series that isn’t DW or related spin-off…)

Quite frankly I’m surprised they even decided to go through the trouble with CGI and gloves and whatnot to make it so he have fingers missing on one hand. I guess they decided they had to do it because learning the reason why Davos is missing the end of his fingers really tells you a lot about the personalty and values of both Davos and Stannis.
I’m not really too hurt by it. I think the word ‘nerd’ has really evolved in the in the last 20 or so years to mean something more like obsession. I’ve seen people start to use the word that way, someone can be described or self described as a ‘history nerd’ or a ‘car nerd’ or a ‘political nerd’.

“Nerd” and “geek” definitely have a less pejorative tint these days, it’s an indicator of being super into something- which we are. “That’s not Davos! That’s the wrong hand!” You just KNOW there are going to be people flipping out about it anyway, but obviously it doesn’t really matter which hand.

I first saw Liam Cunningham’s photo on WiC when the casting announcement was made months and months ago, and I thought the actor looked perfect from the get go. Cunningham looks just like the captain of a working ship. Now hearing him talk, I’m totally sold.
I’ve learned the faces of the Season 2 cast by now, but if I hadn’t, I am wondering if I could have been shown a spread of actor headshots and accurately picked out who was who? I’d like to think I could have. Based only on headshots, in addition to Davos, I think they’re spot on for Brienne, Asha/Yara, Stannis, Edd, Pod, Gilly, Ygritte… as if they couldn’t have possibly chosen anyone else.
littlejanetQuote Reply
I am not sold on Asha/Yara yet, I’ll need to see her in action before I can approve. But everyone else they’ve choosen has been solid well apart from Sansa’s drunken knight who’s name is escaping me at the moment.

He is the perfect Davos. I kind of pictured him in the books a bit different than Liam. But, at first (when I saw the photo of him, when the casting was announced) I was not sure if he could be Davos, but now… I believe that he is Davos.
The only actress that I am still reticent about is Carice Van Houten. The Melisandre that I imagined when I read the books is very different and I believe that Mel is a very complex character. I am expecting very much from Carice Van Houten… But if Liam says that she is good, I am more relaxed about it :)

littlejanetQuote Reply
I don’t expect any of the actors to read the books. Some definitely have, and good for them. It is nice being able to share that experience with the cast. But the actors are supposed to convey what’s in the script, and not necessarily what’s in the book. I trust the writers and showrunners to keep a balance between staying true to the text and letting the performers make their own choices with character interpretation.

and about Gilly (2 in one conversation!)
“She’s wanted for her teats, not her tongue. I’ll have more milk from her, and fewer messages.”
“Her own father got this child on her? We are well rid of her, then. I will no suffer such abominations here. This is not King’s Landing.”

To me, that’s the kind of detail only worth applauding when an actor chooses to go against his natural hand for the sake of the story details–it’s not worth being upset when they DON’T. I guess primarily because that’s not the kind of detail that sticks with me when I read. Handedness doesn’t define who you are as a character. So I wouldn’t even remember it, but then when I hear things like “Maisie Williams trained like a crazy person to be able to use the correct hand,” when folks like me wouldn’t have known either way, it just…I think it’s amazing dedication when such a minor detail is that important to them.
I think one would have to be a real jerkweed to get on Cunningham’s case about it. It totally doesn’t matter.
ZackQuote Reply
haha… thanks for being impressed. But honestly I only remembered the first one exactly. The other two I looked up in my pdf of aDwD remembering vaguely that Stannis said some funny things in his first two conversations with Jon in that book. He has about one sarcastic/funny line per scene he’s in though so it’s not that hard to find. :)
IA with your perception of Stannis here. Cressen said something like that… he’d never understood jokes the way that other boys did (and in the same way never understood cruelty either). He understands that something is funny but doesn’t really experience joy from it. Rather sad actually.
Oh, I feel like the ladies have been blessed with GoT. I mean the sheer numbers are on our side (there are like 4 male characters for every female of similar significance), and even unattractive male characters are being cast with hot, rugged, sexy beasts, for the most part. @_@

Exactly. It’s not a bad thing when they DON’T switch for a role, but it’s very impressive when they DO…
Although in Arya’s case, her handedness is more central to her character. It makes her a more effective fighter, because it reverses the way people are used to fighting, and it’s also symbolic of how unusual she is in her society. It’s not as big of a deal with Davos.
