According to the website of Tim Plester, the English actor and playwright will be taking on the role of Black Walder in season three of Game of Thrones.
A veteran of British film and television, Plester will be appearing next year in the historical heist film Closer to the Moon and the Nick Frost comedy Cuban Fury. In 2011, he wrote and co-directed the documentary, Way of the Morris, about the English folk art of Morris dancing. Plester also had a brief but memorable role in Kickass, as the criminal who had an unfortunate encounter with an industrial microwave.
In A Song of Ice and Fire, his character is the great-grandson of Lord Walder Frey. He is called “Black” Walder on account of his hot temper and frightening demeanor, intimidating even his own family.
We’ve reached out for official confirmation of the casting.
Ours is the Fury: First Roslin, and now Black Walder! The Frey clan is filling out. Plester is great at playing creepy and scary, so I think the role is a good fit.

Well, I guess it’s not Burn Gorman.

Oh, he’s awesome!

Don’t judge, but a secret part of me LOVES Black Walder. He’s just so unrepentantly bad. He’s like Roose Bolton, but with anger.

I love this guy :D

I like that face. heh.
And becoming more and more curious about Gorman and Brooke.

He looks the part. Burn Gorman should play Lame Lothar

He looks creepy enough. Should fit it with the Freys nicely.

Slightly off-topic but as i only use this forum so i felt to ask you guys a Question im pondering upon these days
If there would be a real fight between Dovakhin(Skyrim) and Connor(AC3) who would win?
i think Dovakhin bcz of his magic

If only he was stout, he would be perfect! I think I remember reading that he was.

This guy was a co-star with Francis Magee (Yoren) in “1066: Battle for Middle Earth”. He certainly looks the part.

Cool news!! I still think that Burn Gorman will be one of the chief mutineers who turn on the Old Bear.

Dovakhin because he is a badass Nord who can ride dragons.

Correct. This news is only just coming out now due to the actors or their agents recently updating their CVs with these roles.

joaquinQuote Reply
No, it was actually two Freys that went to Riverrun: Walder Rivers and Lame Lothar Frey. I think Black Walder might replace their role in the show, though.
NezzerQuote Reply
Do you think we ll see the greatjon this season? Because if you pay close attention they seitched the actor who plays gregor clegane and we havent seen umber last season
joaquinQuote Reply
Only if they recast him with another actor, as he’s not going to be in season 3. We could still get the Smalljon, though.
NezzerQuote Reply
Nezzer,
Black Walder is one of those who walk out of Robb’s camp once the Freys hear the news in a Catelyn chapter. Since we didn’t have the Frey defection yet in S2 and Catelyn already knows about Robb’s nuptuals, then there’s a scene that may yet take place out of sequence, involving Black Walder.
Cary StormQuote Reply
Nezzer,
Black Walder is Walder Rivers.
sunspearQuote Reply
I’m impressed by the secrecy of the production. I mean, there have been some small leaks and things that can be inferred from photos, and I imagine cast and crew only know what they need to, but still. You’d think the actors for these small-but-important roles would Tweet or brag to buddies where they’ll be a for a few days or something. Kudos to the NDA folks. They must be terrifying.
Now that a lot of casting speculations are being shot down, this one thinks the mystery actors/rolls are signs of changes. “Myranda” is not a renamed Roslin, so probably Myranda Royce, probably in Kings Landing, probably in a very (very) retooled Sansa plotline. And there are still plenty of roles Gorman and Brooke could be filling in for, but if they’re just another Frey or Night’s Watch, why not…say so? And only one of them can be Coldhands…
JacarbQuote Reply
Grijnwaald,
correct … but if the fight happens in the forest , i think the case would be different as connor is a hell of a Tree Climber
Ahmed HassanQuote Reply
Cary Storm,
Yes, but then the Freys sent two emissaries to arrange Edmure’s wedding, a bastard (Walder Rivers) and a cripple (Lame Lothar Frey), trying to insult Robb and the Tullys. Mayhaps they will be replaced by Black Walder to avoid having half of the cast of the show playing Freys.
sunspear,
No, Walder Rivers is Walder Frey’s son, while Black Walder is Walder Frey’s great-grandson.
NezzerQuote Reply
The fans here have a tendency sometimes of filling in our own ideas about scenes that might take place based on no particular information. There’s nothing here to suggest that either Walder Rivers or Lame Lothar haven’t actually been cast–it’s been established in the series that Walder Frey has a huge amount of progeny, the show is better equipped to hire extras, and there’s particular reason these minor parts need to be combined. We can have our Black Walder and our Walder Rivers and our Lame Lothar.
I’m not suggesting your hypotheses is unlikely, or that your idea won’t happen, just that we’ve as of yet seen nothing that necessarily points that way.
Cary StormQuote Reply
Cary Storm,
I know. They might show up, but I think it’s more convenient to have Black Walder replacing them. Maybe they could add more depth to Black Walder, expose him more as a character. I don’t think it would be a bad idea. I honestly don’t care much about it as it’s a very minor thing.
NezzerQuote Reply
I wonder if they recast the Greatjon with Gorman or Brooke. I find it hard to believe they will leave him out of the red wedding. If I remember correctly Clive Mantle was cast in another show anyway and they never say that he was killed or anything so they must be just recasting him

Well done Nina & co, a woman approves.
Mrs. H’gharQuote Reply
They already filmed RW right? Does that mean none of these recent Frey castings will be involved in that scene?
TheNedQuote Reply
No, that doesn’t mean that at all. These castings were never announced by HBO. We’ve only found out because they were added after the fact, by their agents, to the clients’ CVs. They were, in all probability, involved in that scene.
Cary StormQuote Reply
Not really, Ser Walder Rivers is Bastard Walder…
Black Walder is the second son of Ser Ryman, grandson to Ser Stevron and great-grandson of Lord Walder.

Do you think they ll show the switch of heads after the RW? because in the books we were told by a dialogue in Kings Landing i think. I really want to see it as a viewer because it will make me want spill Frey, Bolton and Lannister blood so much!!! After this scene, i lost my faith in the starks. I like the martells now.
JoaquinQuote Reply
It’s always a bit awkward when a character who’s described in less-favorable terms in the books is cast for the screen. It just doesn’t seem very polite to tell someone they’re perfect for the role of “stoat-faced creeper”. That must be tricky for their agents, i.e. “Great news. I’ve got a role here that I think would be perfect for you…”
Varamyr FourskinsQuote Reply
Varamyr Fourskins,
I’ve always had the same thought……….like, in a comedy where a guy gets set up on a blind date, and she’s comedically terrible looking – how do you cast that? “Uh, hi….we need a girl who’s so very very ugly that it will be a complete joke just to suggest that she might be dateable”
HislocalQuote Reply
Nezzer,
Both greatjon and the small Jon are present at _____ (sorry I’m on my phone and don’t see the blackout button) so they should both be cast if not recast for Great Jon.
RDLQuote Reply
Varamyr Fourskins,
They usually include the age range they’re looking for and a short description of the character. It’s more of a personality description as opposed to looks. The actors come in, do an audition and the casting people pick from that.
CarneQuote Reply
LOL ! I simply became indifferent by ADWD, insanity to keep up.
Counting and identifying Frey relatives is akin to counting ants on a mound.
At some point GRRM started referring to them as a unit, with the dubious
exception a few active standouts. When Catelyn entreated with senior
Walder, to bargain for Robb’s men crossing the Twins, there were so many
of them present that even a panoramic view would take in their large numbers.

I don’t want to be th one that complains, but I am going to say this. While admittedly looking creepy, I don’t really think this little man can pull of a frightening demeanor without say holding the power that someone like Joffrey or Ramsay has.

I’m happy that GRRM never created other branch of Frey family – for example Lord Frey’s male siblings or cousins and their children. You see it? 200 or even 300 Freys – a little family army.
bonQuote Reply
I think that when winter comes Walder Frey is going to die and there would be a little family war to see who suceeds. Freys are greedy roaches.

I’m so into the Freys – I can tell them all apart. I DEMAND Lame Lothar. Do away with some of the others if you must, but don’t deprive us of Lame Lothar! I still wish they would have had one composite Frey in Season 2… we really needed one around the camp…

Good stuff. Along with Lothar the Lame, Jinglebells, Roslin, the Walders Big and Little, and the Late Lord himself, Black Walder’s one of the few Freys I can remember (as anything more than a name) off the top of my head. If only for his dark reputation.

Speaking of this, I have a couple questions perhaps someone can answer: why does Ser Gregor stand for Joffrey in ASoS, but a knight of the Kingsguard MUST stand for Cersei in ADwD? Why wouldn’t one of the Kingsguard have to stand for Joffrey against the Red Viper? (I guess the Red Viper wouldn’t have championed Tyrion if he wasn’t fighting Ser though) Was this mentioned in ADwD? I don’t recall. Is it simply Lannister hubris? They’ll bend the rules for (the late) Joffrey against Tyrion when it serves their purpose & seems adventageous, but won’t bend the rules again for Cersei when she’s the abomination? Clarification please.
TheSwordOfTheMorningQuote Reply
TheSwordOfTheMorning,
My guess is that it was because Joffrey wasn’t the one on trial. Since it was Tyrion who was on trial and he who demanded a trial by combat, his accusers were able to select whomever they wanted to oppose him.
