With HBO starting to promo the upcoming season, I thought it would be a good time to look ahead to season three and talk about the moments we are looking forward to seeing. We’re going to be doing this round-table style, so all of our writers (yes, that includes FaB!) will weigh in with their thoughts on what moments they are looking forward to most in the upcoming season.
Since all of these moments will be pulled from the book, you can expect HUGE spoilers in the following post. So only click through to the post and the comments if you have read A Storm of Swords!
Winter Is Coming: Ok, I will kick things off. The biggie is obviously the Red Wedding. Every single Ice and Fire reader remembers what their immediate thoughts were when they read this part in the book. It was shocking, gut-wrenching and so very Martin. The showrunners, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, have talked before about how they’ve been looking forward to adapting this scene since they first started on the show, so I expect a faithful adaptation. And with the way the show has been able to successfully handle the big moments in past seasons (Ned’s execution, the birth of the dragons, Battle of the Blackwater, etc.) I fully anticipate that the Red Wedding will be just as impactful on screen as it was on page.
Ours is the Fury: Reading the Red Wedding was like getting a kick in the gut, and I’m hoping that same brutal effect will come across onscreen. One of my other favorite scenes in the entire book series will appear this season – Jaime returning to help Brienne after he’s been freed, and the two of them facing down a bear together. It’s a major turning point for Jaime Lannister’s evolution and their uneasy connection.
Hear Me Roar: If they nail the emotional side of the Red Wedding the way they managed with Baelor, we have a winner on our hands. Ideally, even the attentive fresh viewers should be caught unaware for maximum impact. Ah, the bearpit scene. I tried not to get too excited about that bit at first, since I suspected the production might want to take shortcuts and avoid handling bears, but since we heard the bear is in, I have been fully invested in the anticipation of this character-defining moment. My choice of the material I am looking forward to most may be slightly unconventional. Queenscrown. Alright, the place may be different or nondescript, but Jon’s escape in the stormy night, Bran’s party trying to avoid detection – and first and foremost the two storylines coming excruciatingly close together. Establishing links between the many different narrative strands is all important in making the sprawling world and the tale itself feel truly organic. I heard that Winter shares this view.
Fire And Blood: I have every confidence the Red Wedding will be handled excellently. Oddly, the first scene in A Song of Ice and Fire that actually made me sit up and go, “I need to see this story onscreen,” was Dany’s “Mhysa” moment:
“Mhysa!” they called. “Mhysa! MHYSA!” They were all smiling at her, reaching for her, kneeling before her. “Maela,” some called her, while others cried “Aelalla” or “Qathei” or “Tato,” but whatever the tongue it all meant the same thing. Mother.
It’s only part of what made A Storm of Swords, in my opinion, the best book in the series thus far, and it still gives me chills every time I re-read it. And I am pretty confident we’re going to get it on the show.
Winter Is Coming: As HMR said, the Queenscrown moment is one I’m really looking forward to. In the book we see everything from Jon’s point-of-view, but in the show they could get creative with how they cut back and forth between Jon and Bran controlling Summer. Another scene that should be exciting to see on screen? The Hound vs. Beric Dondarrion. Not just the fight itself (which will be epic what with a freaking flaming sword involved!) but it should be quite the creepy ending when Beric rises once again.
Ours is the Fury: After reading the interview with the show’s SFX floor supervisor about creating the flaming sword effects for Beric and Sandor’s duel, I’m really looking forward to that as well. I’m curious too to see what it will look like when Sam kills a White Walker with dragonglass. Finding another weapon that can be used against the White Walkers is a bright spot of hope; that and seeing how the Night’s Watch finally embraces Sam, as the Slayer.
Fire And Blood: I’m going to come right out and say I want to see Nikolaj Coster-Waldau naked and in a bathtub. Partly to make up for the fact that no one got to see Tom Wlaschiha naked and in a bathtub. There’s been a distinct lack of bathtubs following season 1′s awesome dragonsexposition scene with Harry Lloyd and his fabulously scarred nipple / Roxanne McKee and her distractingly well-placed strands of wet hair. (Seriously, go re-watch that scene. It’s brilliant.)
Hear Me Roar: Count me in for the Sam the Slayer scene! I bet his victim will be the White Walker from the S2 finale. One more scene to add: Jon and Ygritte in the cave. The previously established dynamics betweet the two characters promises a lot of fun, plus it will be refreshing to get a positive, non-exploitative sex scene. I am all the more looking forward to it since the stunning Grjótagjá cave has just been confirmed as a location they are using this year.

I hope the Red Wedding isn’t overly foreshadowed or telegraphed. I want it to be genuinely shocking to non-readers.
A friend of mine wanted to know if the girl Robb was supposed to marry is going to turn out to be really beautiful; he thinks there’s going to be some sort of love triangle. I responded, ‘you’re right, she is really beautiful.’ ;)
But seriously, we readers should stop talking about it so much. It’s getting harder and harder to avoid spoilers. Just last week, I was on youtube searching for something with absolutely no relation to Downton Abbey and saw a video with a totally spoilery title. :(

its been a while sense i read the books but i believe this scene was in storm of swords – when Bran and the group were resting in the cave on the way to the way. The old man meets them and talks of the times when there was a “stark in winterfell”. When there was stability and justice. For me – really emphasized how far the story had come and how desperate the situation had become. I think it would be a really really cool scene. especially with Jon, Arya, and Sansa all reaching rock bottom if i recall. could happen after the RW

I have a few things I’m looking forward to the most:
1. All of Arya’s scenes. I have loved Arya’s story in all of the books, but since the first time I read it in 2005, A Storm of Swordshas always been my favorite for Arya. Her story is a true adventure tale.
2. The scene that Jon Snow, Ygritte, and the other Wildlings climb the Wall. That should make for some breathtaking imagery.
3. The bear pit! It is a hair-raising scene in the book – just imagine it on-screen.
4. The Red Wedding, of course. But mainly from Arya’s point of view outside. When I read the book, I found that to be the most disturbing part – knowing that she had traveled so far, and got so close…and to have it ALL ripped from her!
5. If it is included, the death of Joffrey, capture of Tyrion, and escape of Sansa. I think that would be an epic ending to Season 3.
There are many more things I’m looking forward too. But, I thought I would just name my top five. Of course, I’m looking forward to seeing Daenerys’ story, Sansa’s story, anything with Stannis/Melisandre/Davos, and The Hound/Beric Dondarrion fight!

I LOVE Jon’s storyline in ASOS, prolly won’t get to see the battle for Castle Black and the Wall til season 4 but I think that might be the scene I am mos tlooking forward to in the entire series thus far.
Beric and The Hound will be epic, Arya’s story is also great…. really mad they killed the Tickler though, the chapter in the book where she goes apeshit on him is in my top 3 favorite moments of the entire series.
Tyrion and Tywin’s interaction should be very compelling as well, IMO Charles Dance rivals Dinklage for the best overall acting performance on the show (gutsy I know becuz everyone is absolutely amazing, but CD has really nailed Tywin to a T, and Tywin is a very difficult character to portray.)

In the first half of A Storm of Swords, I don’t think there is 10 episodes worth of Stannis/Melisandre/Davos material. I could be wrong. So, I think they may include quite a bit of his learning. And possibly extend his imprisonment. But that’s just me. HaHa.

I think that the split will be when Joffrey dies. I imagine a very intense sequence, from three points of view: 1: Sansa being rescued from King’s Landing by Littlefinger (as opposed to Dontos seeing as he won’t be in it). 2: Cersei cradling Joffrey, and screaming “SEIZE HIM!” to the guards, pointing to Tyrion. 3: The final shot of Tyrion beeing seized by the guards, and looking VERY worried!

I’ve been wondering what they will do for the season finale, due to the lack of epic moments immediately after the Red Wedding. Here are my top 4:
-Purple wedding: Easily the best moment to end on, but runs the risk of making the season to cramped like Season 2.
-Ygritte death: Another good moment to end on, but runs the risk of alienating the viewers with more likable character deaths.
-New Joffrey lesson: Tywin makes a comment that Joffrey ‘requires sharp lesson’. They might invent a new scene showing that, to give viewers some condolence.
-Bear Pit scene: Would certainly screw up the timeline, but it’s a great moment and would help explain why it takes Jaime so long to reach Kings Landing.

But we know that ep 9 is RW, and Joffrey dying happens a bit after that in the book, alot has to happen between the two weddings. Narratively speaking that would leave episode 10 much too condensed. And why would the put two such big events in the latter half of one season. It makes more sense to have that play in season 4, then they have time to introduce Oberyn and the Dornish storyline and get Jamie to Kings Landing for the funeral AND get Sansa ready to flee. They both will already have so much to deal with (hand, captivity, Brienne, major character development, release, bearpit; intrigue with Tyrells, Littlefinger I guess in this version, Wedding, dealing with deaths in family).
Is it definitely confirmed the purple wedding is happening this season?

Jaime’s bath scene. But if we’re going to do this, let’s do it right: no coy camera angles, no cute teasing cut aways. The full monty, please. We’ve had unending, unblushing, sometimes unneeded female full frontals, so play fair with the distaff segment of your audience.
Also, on a personal note, one was scheduled for major surgery at 8:00 am so one needed to rest. One was up to 5:00 am reading SoS on Kindle and was so stunned with Cat’s opening her eyes that one couldn’t sleep afterwards. One hopes they treat this scene well and that it the final one of the season.

I don’t really understand why viewers should get no hints or clues concerning what will happen at the Red Wedding. I’ve come to realize that not everyone caught Martin’s hints in the text, but I felt like I was getting smacked over the head with foreshadowing.
Two scenes that immediately come to mind, are
a) The prophecies of the Ghost of High Heart. She speaks of a terrible wedding, filled with terrible drumming, and pipes, and screams, but the worst noise was the tinkling of bells.
and
b) Dany’s vision in the HOTU, where she sees a ruined wedding feast, with all the guests slaughtered, some still holding cups or food. At the head seat was a man with a wolf’s head for a body wearing an iron crown.
The last vision was omitted from season 2, so they may play it light with the foreshadowing in the show, but some well places hints, would be appropriate and help remake the book experience. When I read AS0S the first time, I spent most of the chapter thinking “No Robb and Catelyn, run away, DO NOT GO IN THERE!” Then I was screaming at Arya “NO! CAN’T YOU SEE THAT EVERYTHING IS WRONG? STOP RUNNING TOWARD THE MASSACRE!” Then the Hound takes her with his axe, and I couldn’t believe it.
Basically, that was a long-winded version in defense of RW foreshadowing. It will surprise people, it will shock them, a few homes may need some new TV sets, even if some hints are dropped. It definitely raised the suspense/drama of the whole scene for me.

So much to look forward to this season. I think seasons 3 and 4 will be the best of this show cause lets face it Feast for crows and ADWD just aren’t as good as SOS. So lets enjoy these seasons while they last! For me season 3 is -
1. The Red Wedding obviously. I’ve been trying to imagine how its gonna look and if it looks anything like in my imagination it should be pretty amazing. I have 100% faith that they will do it well. They have nailed all the big moments so far.
2. All the Jaime/ Brienne scenes – especially Jaime losing his hand and the bear pit.
3. Arya’s adventures with the BWB and the Hound. From the Hound VS Beric to arriving at the Red Wedding to Arya’s brutal murder to retrieve needle. Should be some of the best scenes of the season.
4. Tyrion/ Tywin/ Cersei scenes. Just having those characters in the same scene is going to be exciting. And seeing Tywin putting Cersei down should be fun. And Tyrion marrying Sansa should surprise the non book readers!
5. If they are doing it this season – Joffrey’s death.
6. Ramsey!
7. Dany stuff. (Never been a favorite of mine)

On the “basic instinct” side of things, my brain demands Jaime-in-tub. WANT! NOW!!!

I’m literally looking forward to the first second of episode 1, ’till the last second of episode 10!
But, mainly:
-The Queen Of Thorns. What can I say? Only the coolest grandma freakin’ ever!
-North of the Wall. Jon and Ygritte get pretty cool, especially since that awesome cave is confirmed! And climbing over the Wall. That should include some pretty epic special effects.
-The Lightning Lord. I wanna see his flaming sword and him rise from the dead, again and again.
-Jojen Reed telling Bran of how their fathers fought together at The Tower Of Joy.
-Jaime and Brienne. They were awesome. The bear pit and the bath tub will be done well I hope.
-I hope Sansa starts making little trips to the godswood to meet with Dontos…
-Even the slightest mention of the Martell’s

Season 3 won’t end with the death of Joffrey. Reasons:
1) the Red Viper has not been cast. He has very important scenes with Tyrion that will be impossible to happen if Tyrion is in prison.
2) There’s not enough time to have the purple wedding in episode 10. Episode 10 is used to tie up loose ends and set up the next season. We will need to see the aftermath of the Red Wedding, the next step in Danys journey.
3) mixing up joffrey’s wedding with so many additional scenes will do a disservice to that scene.
4) we r not going to Tyrion start of season 4 arrested for the majority of the season. That would be a waste of a great character
5) Penny hasn’t been cast and she has an important role in joffrey’s wedding.
I could go on. I bet my house we will not see the purple wedding in season 3

I’m stoked that they are using THAT cave for, presumably THAT scene.
Mostly I’m looking forward to the dynamics between certain characters, especially since Brian C mentioned earlier this year that it was going to be a season of family dynamics.
But even Jon/Mance, Jon/Ygritte, Jamie/Brienne, Arya/Sandor and Theon/Ramsey are what I look forward to.
I also look forward to seeing the Old Bear’s death, as this is also the first indication of Jon’s future. And the cave could be beautiful and subtle, as mentioned above.
I’m waiting for a season 3 or 4 cliffhanger where Arya meets someone on a boat, with that awesome “Valar Morghulis” theme playing hintfully…

You answered your own question. The BwB finding Catelyn’s body and ressurecting her is the most likely end to season 3. Joff’s death will not be this year, it’s simply impossible for the timeline and as KG said it would be poor planning for season 4. It would also be cramming way too much shock into season 3, which would dilute the impact of the RW.
I agree with Tom O’Sevens…I’m looking forward to Jon’s life with the wildings, particularly Tormund Giantsbane. He’s such a fun character.

Season 3 has got some of the best moments in the series.
As said above, Jaime saving Brienne is one of them. I kind of hope they restructure that scene a little bit around Locke (who’ll evidently be standing in for Vargo Hoat). I want Jaime to bust in an save Brienne. Locke yells down, “Come back to rescue the wench I see?” or something of the sort. Jaime rams a dagger with his left hand through Locke’s throat…”Her name is Brienne!”
But my favorite moment of the whole series is Tyrion and Sansa’s bedding. I remember tears streaming down my face after I read, “That’s why the gods made whores, for imps like me.” That moment really crystalized just how invested I’d become in the characters. D&D better not fuck with that line, or I’m gonna be pissed!
That’s what separates ASOIAF from other fantasy. When you think of your favorite parts of everything else, it’s always a big battle or some fantastical creature. All my favorite moments from these books are little character moments. The books and the show really transcend the genre.

Yes, when reading the book, I sensed that something bad was coming, but I had no idea of the extent of what would happen and the book teased me by suggesting that everything would be OK after all. The “Jamie lannister sends his regards” line was said when Bolton stabbed Robb, from what I recall. That means all we’d miss if they cut to black as he gets stabbed is Catelyns throat being cut. It’d still have the slaughter and the arrows and all that, and I personally think that cutting right after that line is a more powerful ending than cutting/fading after Catelyn dies. Maybe episode 10 can open with bodies being dumped in the river, or they could have Catelyn die before Robb. Then again, the “he’s just a grandson” thing Lord Walder says would also be a powerful line to end on.

Since it hasn’t been mentioned yet: Jaime’s dream under the weirwood, that leads him to rescue Brienne. I don’t expect it to follow the book – no other dream sequence has – but it’s one of my favorite scenes in the entire series, and hauntingly well written.

I’m with a lot of people on being torn about the Red Wedding. I remember feeling nauseated when I read it, letting my imagination really get into graphic visualization. But the moment to see, for me? Sansa’s pride finally refusing to budge during her wedding to Tyrion. I’m looking forward to seeing how they approach her wedding gown and the ceremonial pieces of it, as well as Joffery acting as ‘Ned’ for it.
There are so many great scenes, though, the season is going to offer some amazing things to television yet again.

I was much more moved by Jamie’s dream and ensuing conviction than by the bear pit itself, and I’m not sure quite how they’ll convey that shift of conscience in the show.
I also thought the most heartbreaking part of the Red Wedding was when Cat laments that Ned always loved her hair – an inner dialogue moment that it would be hard to make room for on the show.

viewers to finally Accept that JL is going through an evolution of

found JL character arc quite interesting. He had evolved from being an

I firmly believe the PW will be in episode 10.
Why would they move the Tyrion wedding to ep. 8 (way late as of the book chronology) otherwise? It looks like they’re going for “3 wedding in 3 final episodes” IMO.
PW at the end of season 3:
- is a natural end of a season arc for King’s Landing characters. I mean, J and M betrothal was already announced in S2e10. How long can you stall it? How long does it take to plan a bloody wedding?
- gives the viewers (overwhelmingly pro-Stark) some hope and satisfactions.
- is a powerful BAM moment
The main objections people seems to have are:
1) It’s to late/not enough stuff will be left for S4.
This seems to be based on notion that ASOS will be two full seasons. That seems unworkable to me and, despite many claims to the contrary, was never actually confirmed by official sources. It seems reasonable that S4 will include parts of AFFC/ADWD, most likely the Iron Islands & Dorn plotlines.
2) They didn’t cast Oberyn.
Yeah, that would like Bran/Theon ACOK storyline without Reek & Reeds.
3) So much happens in ASOS! You can’t cramp all of this in one season!
Most of the big events happens in the last 3 of the book. Before that point, it’s almost all buildup. IMO, Season 2 suffered from the lack of (obvious) plot developments and the showrunners shouldn’t repeat that mistake.

After the absolute gut-wrenching Red Wedding, I hope the season can end on a high note with the death of Joffrey. Also, if they choose to have his death, I hope they go all out on making it as twisted and horrific as possible because if anyone deserves a gratuitous, brutal death, it’s Joffrey (and next in line would be Cersei). I’m talking prolonged choking/gasping, face turning red, then blue, then purple. Maybe add him clawing at his neck. Man, the fact that I just typed that either means I’m really twisted or I just really hate Joffrey.
This book has so many memorable scenes with all the main characters. Sansa’s secret meetings in the Godswood, Sansa’s hairnet and wedding scene should be great.
Jon’s dealings with Mance and the wildlings and subsequent betrayal.

It only makes sense considering both Martin and the writers direction with the show. They give us Robb’s death and the head-switcher to make use hate them, then kill Joff to make us love them; only to end it with the worst accusation of a character you can’t help but love. 1. It isn’t so much the fact that that it would reduce the content of season 4, as it would make episode 10 way to cramped. The finale has to provide a wrap up for all major plot threads, so that episode would need to include Tywin explaining his role, Stannis’s decision about Edric storm, scenes with Arya, Jon, and Dany, and then finally all that happens in the lead up to the PW, including revealing who was responsible for the assassination attempt on Bran. That’s way too much to happen in one episode.
2. It isn’t just that they would have to rework Oberyn’s introduction. When the death happens, new viewers will have a week of speculating who was behind it. Oberyn will be one of the prime targets. Plus, it would mean fewer episode with Oberyn, which is horrifying.
3. No argument really here, except messing with the timeline this much could have disastrous consequences.
I, originally, did want the PW in episode 10. But I also wanted the Red wedding in episode 8, so that we could get the aftermath out of the way in episode 9. Without that, episode 10 will be to cramped to include the PW.

Hands down the Battle of the Fist.
I have this vision of the Black Brothers battling wights in semi darkness, the ring of torches, flaming arrows, the undead bear wreaking havoc, and then the Brothers saddling up and frantically charging in a wedge down the mountain, making their escape smashing through the undead hordes….
Okay, we haven’t seen many horses so the big escape on horseback is probably not going to happen. And the wights’ march on the Fist in the Season 2 finale seemed to be happening on an overcast day, not at night… Sigh.
And while we DID get to see an undead horse, the bear might be too much to hope for.
But they’d better do that scene right dernit! And PLEASE… make it at least a little darker than it was when last we saw Sam and the white walker!
In the same vein, I’m really hoping we’ll see Stannis seeing the battle in Mellisandre’s flames. It was such a huge, underplayed, part of ASOS but with such dramatic potential. Imagine being able to see the battle, knowing what it is, as Stannis has no idea the import of what he’s witnessing.
Better still… if we’re taking liberties… why not have DAVOS see the battle in the flames… ??? Nah, that’s heresy.

People, use common sense. Joffrey’s wedding will be mid-late season 4, not season 3. There is quite a bit of Kings Landing stuff that needs to happen before that which we know won’t be in season 3. For example, Oberyn Martell has to be introduced and his role established before the wedding, and we already know that he won’t be in this season. My prediction is: episode 6 or 7 of season 4 = Joffrey’s wedding, episode 7 or 8 = Tyrion’s trial, episode 9 = the Viper vs the Mountain, episode 10 = the escape. while I’m on the topic of what will not be in season 3, i think Coldhands won’t be in it. I think that Sam’s storyline will end with the mutiny, leaving Coldhands for an early-mid season 4 introduction.
anyway, the things i am looking forward to the most in season 3:
1) The Red Wedding
2) The seige of the Fist of the First Men
3) the sacking of Astapor
4) the mutiny at Craster’s keep
5) Jon being brought before Mance on the Fist of the First Men, and seeing the devastation the remains there
6) Queenscrown
7) Sam the Slayer

10) Theon torture scenes. don’t get me wrong, Theon is one of my favourite characters/POVs, but it will still be interesting to see how they handle those scenes. I am kind of scared at how the tv viewers will react to Ramsay though. book-readers are generally split on their opinions of Theon, but almost all tv viewers hate him. I’m kind of worried that they will like Ramsay because he is torturing Theon. (Ramsay is by far my least favourite character in the entire series, I hate him more than Joffrey, and I want him to have his face flayed off)

About that, if you remeber SOS you ll know that Robb had to take several slashes at the head of Karstark (and that showed a little bit of weakness). Curiosly on season 2 Theon kills Ser Rodrik the same way. Its a minor detail but i thing Karstark will say that line and Robb inmediately will give him a one slash clean death.

I’m doing the AFFC/ADWD combo re-read. It is much more enjoyable than when I first read AFFC and ADWD. Though Dany’s chapters are still horrible and Tyrion’s chapters after being captured by Jorah are nearly as bad. I can’t wait until all of the characters are in Westeros.

Having just re-read A Storm of Swords, the Purple Wedding is not that far after the Red Wedding. However, I don’t think they can end on the Purple Wedding, though I could easily be wrong. I’m really looking forward to seeing the Queen of Thorns on screen and the scene with her, Margaery & Sansa.
But, I think ending the season on the death of Ygritte could be too much of a downer following the RW in episode 9, but I know nothing. Or, maybe Jon defending the wall before Janus Slynt & then Stannis arrive? Though, maybe they could do a bit more with the Wall and end it on Stannis arriving at the wall to end episode 10?
So much for season 4, though. Jon becoming L-C after being offered Winterfell, Arya & the Hound and their fight with the Mountain’s men, then Arya leaving him to go to Braavos, Sansa escaping KL and then Littlefinger killing Lysa after she admits to poisoning Jon Arryn, Bran going beyond the wall, Jamie & Cersei being reunited, Tyrion’s trial and the Mountain vs the Red Viper (they better keep that almost word-for-word! I need to hear “Elia of Dorne. You raped her. You murdered her. You killed her children.”) then, Tyrion killing Tywin…

Arya/Sandor: Sandor hits Arya in the head with his axe
Samwell: the mutiny
Jon: his return to the Wall
Bran: Queenscrown. they’re going to have to stretch out his storyline a bit.
Theon: he’ll just have some torture scenes spread throughout the season
Asha (Yara): maybe a scene in Deepwood Motte with her hearing about the Sacking of Winterfell
The Vale: ? not sure what the hell they’re doing with that. maybe a reaction to the Red Wedding
Daenerys: winning over the sellswords at Yunkai and preparing to go to Meereen
King’s Landing: reactions to the Red Wedding. the timeline of events in King’s Landing will be shuffled up a bit; everything to do with Oberyn will be moved to season 4. the only mentions of Dorne will be Twyin offering a seat on the small council in return for their support, and Cersei bitching about Myrcella
Jaime/Brienne: leave Harrenhal.
Davos/Stannis/Melsandre: reactions to the Red Wedding, Davos talking about 2/3 leeches (assuming they haven’t pushed back Balon’s death), Stannis is about to execute Davos when he pulls out a letter.

I think Jaime and Jon had the best chapters in ‘A Storm of Swords’. I’m expecting Jaime to be the star of season 3. NCW has nailed the role so far. I have no doubt he will be able to handle the larger role going forward.

I am going to have to disobey and put no spoiler tags. Because seriously, if you, non readers, are reading a ”GOT topic on events of the third book”, then you deserve to get spoiled because you’re just downright stupid.
Events I look for:
- Red Wedding: man that one was a bummer, but at the same time, the best thing I’ve ever read.
- Tyrion and Tywin: I loved their conversations in book 3 where Tywin can be so mean to him. It almost justifies Tyrion killing him. ALMOST!!
- All of Daenerys. A true Targaryen.
- Queenscrown: I wonder if they’ll put Jon and Bran’s POVs at the same time, or do exactly like the book and show each one’s persective sepperated. I hope for the latter.
- Arya woldfreams? I can only hope.
- Sam the Slayer. So cool.

Oh and for thosew ho think Purple Wedding will be in season 3. D&D have said they cut the book roughly in half. Putting the PW in season 3 is not roughly, it’s a HUGE change from the books. PW must be at 80% of the 3rd book. There has to be some ”leading to it”.

There are so many pivotal moments in ASOS, that it is difficult for a woman to pick just a few. Many of the moments listed above are also this woman’s favorites. Among the book scenes, a woman is looking forward to Arya reclaiming Needle (“Is there gold in the village?”), Sansa’s wedding, UnCat emerging from the water (with Arya’s wolf dream), and all of Brienne’s adventures. This woman cannot say she is looking forward to the RW. : – (

Mostly the Red Wedding and I hope they allow Michelle Fairly to do all the scenes from the book from killing the son to her losing her mind as Robb dies. Also I would love if they closed the season with her being revived by Thoros as Beric dies.
I’m not sure where they are cutting Jon’s storyline but Ygritte’s death is one the saddest even if I never really cared about her.
Also whatever crazy scenes they make up between Lysa and I’m assuming Little Finger. The Eyerie set is still the best piece they’ve made for the show.

but it isn’t just a bunch of reveals that close out book 3 after Joffrey’s wedding. there is a series of massive events that immediately flow on from it (namely Tyrion’s trial, Oberyn vs Gregor, Tyrion killing Tywin). there are also other major yet unrelated events that happened after Joffrey’s wedding, such as the siege of the Wall, Jon’s election, Lysa’s death and Barristan and Jorah infiltrating Meereen.
the most likely candidate for the climax of the penultimate episode would be the Viper vs the Mountain. Joffrey’s wedding will probably happen somewhere between episodes 4-7. I’m thinking probably episode 6, or maybe episode 5.

This entire season should be fucking crazily good with the material they have to work with. Eery scene of every episode should be amazing. I am extremely envious of non-book readers, the majority of whom will have probably just about forgotten all about Game Of Thrones until its return in March. Boy!, are they in for a treat.
I have to say that Joffrey’s wedding is the most logical place for the season to end. All the King’s landing stuff coes to a climax at that point setting up for a new set of circumstances.

So far they have exceeded all my expectations about Sansa’s storyline. I did not think they (and Sophie) would be able to do it as well as they did when she has no confidante.

Why do so many people think the Purple Wedding will be in this season. I hope they don’t, it would make everything feel too cramped and get silly (with all the weddings). Since there is no Oberyn, it’s almost impossible to include the PW, unless you severly diminish his role. They also have several other extra stories to include (like the new introduction to Ramsay). Read aSoS again, there’s not much material before PW, even less between RW and PW (there are two chapter of tyrions in between them, both very short, first one is the news or RW reaching KL, second one is the morning of PW already. And about 80 pages of other things that are almost certain in season 3)…
I’m actually getting bit resigned to the possibility, or likelyhood, that we will not see PW this season, but I really don’t see how they can prolong that wedding much futher, I mean, it was essentially announced at the end of season 2…
…so whole season 3 in KL will be just wedding preparations? Oh joy….
If it’s not this season, it’ll have to be very early next season, as, indeed, after the wedding there’s a LOT of stuff going on kingslanding and very little elsewhere…
(And indeed, there’s very little going on in Kingslanding before the wedding…)

Just so. A woman agrees with all here that Nymeria pulls Cat from the water and is thinking those words…and Arya is having her wolf dream at that time where she can see that Cat is dead. As Nymeria gets Cat out of the water, soon after the BWB show up and Beric revive her, but Nymeria runs off before Cat is revived, so Arya only sees that her mother is dead, and gives up all thoughts of trying to find her at that point. That is a big moment for Arya, as she thinks at that moment that all her family is gone and she is alone.

After the Red Wedding (of course!) I’m most looking forward to Dany getting her army of Unsullied at Astapor. It’s probably the single part of the book that I re-read the most. The scene as written is epic, badass, satisfying, visually stunning, and a major turning point for Dany’s plot. I really hope it lives up to my high expectations.

I don’t mean to be that guy, but is Rob Stark’s death kinda overrated? I mean I think the Red Wedding is more devastating than any other event in the series so far but is it the method that George killed off the Starks that has most readers recoiling in fear or the emotional investment. I care about Robb, but not like I care about some of the other characters. I think the Red Wedding is so heart wrenching because of the head swap multiple stabbings and deaths AND because its told from Catelyn Tully’s point of view. A mother whom we have know through books 1 2 and 3 sees her child killed right before she herself is killed.
I dunno, I just don’t feel much emotional attachment to the character of Robb. Not to say I don’t feel sorry for him, but his death was heart breaking only (to me) because of HOW he died and the eyes his death is seen through.

Since that’s only mentioned in the books after the fact, I’d like to see Ser Jorah, Ser Barristan, Strong Belwas, etc. climb through the shitty sewers to take Meereen unawares.
The Wildlings scaling the Wall should also be pretty baller.
Do we think the Magnar & his wildings storming Castle Black will be this season or next? Regardless, that has potential to be awesome, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s cut due to cost & want of other battle scenes.

I agree. Since Robb isn’t a POV character, I don’t feel for him like I do EVERY other Stark (aside from Rickon, who up until this point could not even exist in the books–we’ll see what happens with him in the future though).
That said, I think his death in the show is going to be different since Richard Madden’s Robb Stark is a well beloved character and was adapted into a somewhat-POV character (much more than in the books anyway). GRRM will receive bundles of angry fan mail from young ladies after the RW episode.

The head switch and Bolton betrayal is what is a little more shocking, but what really seals the deal is Cat’s throat getting cut and her naked corpse being thrown into the river. That is so over the top and unexpected and brutal. Not to mention she loses her mind and starts clawing her face off before she dies. That to me was what made the Red Wedding so shocking

Strongly agree on this. I’ve talked about that very fact at great length with some friends on another forum. I think/hope/feel Davos will rescue Rickon and Osha and bring them to Stannis.
Stannis can then use Rickon to get the Northerners to break ties with Bolton and rally to his cause. I can see Osha serving Rickon in Winterfell and she can work to get the Wildings to fall in line and defend the north from the invasion of the Others.

The scene you describe would be excellent, even plausible to the writers, but
I’m not sure if that was the reference of Daroe’s post. Your suggestion
focuses on the events surrounding Tyrion’s revenge. The earlier post
( not mine ) referred simply to Jaime’s reveal to Tyrion, that moment
only to admitting to the betrayal of Tysha. Although all these borrow
from the same few pages , I would have to lower my expectations of
GoT including all in these effectual moments in the script. If they did so,
I would probably well up in affection and forgive them for any previous
misstep that’s occurred or likely to occur, in any season ( okay, that’s an
exaggeration, but you get my point ).
Why aren’t Benioff and Weiss hiring people to sort out ASOIAF web boards
for these tasty ideas. There are quite a few morsels posted here, not to dismiss
the episode lists by some. I ‘m impressed by a worthy few that should be
stolen and ferreted away ( by the extras that occasionally visit ) to the
writers. Anyway, those pages had me quite taken aback at how cunning Tyrion
is in all things.

It was situational effect and not emotional for me. I had no attachment to Robb and honestly I assumed he would be killed as soon as I read he married Jeyne and ignored his previous bethrothal. I Also disliked Catelyn’s actions in ASOS, so neither death bothered me much personally. However, reading about the caranage from her POV was an emotional experience.
Part of me was almost cheering inside as I enjoyed being shocked by GRRM’s writing. So many, if not most Fantasy books are so formulaic that I was really enjoying the fact that in GRRM’s world no one is safe and even the seemingly “unkillable” characters were being killed off!
If the other Stark kids are killed off I will have more personal reactions, but Robb and Catelyn’s actual deaths did not affect me much, unlike how they died, which did affect me.

One of the “drooling” Tom Wlaschiha fan girls here. My entire belly dance troupe adores him too and even my boyfriend is a fan! He is a living doll and we’re happy for him as well. Jaqen/Tom’s European fan girls have uploaded to Tumblr most of those “cringe-inducing” German sitcoms you’re talking about. Since none of us speaks German it’s hard to tell if they’re good or bad, but it sure is nice listening to Tom’s deep, resonant voice, which is almost as beautiful as his eyes. We’re all hoping he returns to GoT in season 4 – preferably bathing in the Turkish Baths of Braavos (since they left out the Hot Tub scene at Harrenhal).

Except of course that Percy Shelley was referring to the tyrant Ozymandias the Greek name for the one and only Pharoah Ramses II who ruled a great empire and enslaved thousands to build great works. It can be interpreted that the poem mocks the ends of all tyrants who were once so proud and powerful and yet like Ramses, like the emperors of Rome, like tyrants where are they now?
If anything the scene reminds me of Return of the King when travelling through the Morgul vale Sam and Frodo find a statue of Isildur/Elendil? With his head REPLACED by an rude makeshift orc’s head yet in the grass nearby is the actual head of the Numenorean king. A grim site this is at first but when the sunshine falls upon the flowers growing around the statue’s crown it soon resembles an actual crown. Therefore this scene with the statue of the fallen king could be another deconstruction of high fantasy. That Robb is not Aragorn, that despite all the omens for a return of the greatness of old this trope will not be followed through. The following chapters ensure that sentiment.
But regardless of my thoughts, it is one possible interpretation :-)

You responding at such (interesting) length is exactly why I like this sort of post: it kicks off fascinating discussions that gather a wealth of possible interpretations and fresh ways of looking at the story we love so much.
The literary device of foreshadowing and Martin’s approach to it is, imho, one of the many things that make these books anything but your run-of-the-mill fantasy.
For me, the scene in question drove home the ages upon ages of Westeros history and how there are stories beneath stories everywhere, as in our own world…

No way the Purple Wedding makes it into season three, nor should it. Season four will be the downfall of the Lannister family, with Joffrey and Tywin both dying, Jaime denying Cersei, and Tyrion on the run. I also don’t think D&D would waste the opportunity to expand the role of Oberyn Martell, since his character allows them to bring the Dornish characters into the story line in a way that feels organic and natural.
I also don’t think that D&D are foolish enough to discount the powerful endings that ASoS provides for each of the characters, by pushing too far forward into AFfC & ADwD territory. Sure, they won’t be adapting books as concisely as they have been, but that doesn’t mean they’ll leave ASoS behind in the middle of season four and end the season wherever they can get to with the remaining episodes. That’d just be bad writing/planning.
What’s more likely is that Joffrey will die early in season four, and Oberyn’s role will be beefed up. Not only because he’s one of the best characters in the series, but he’s also the perfect gateway to bringing Dorne into the fold. I expect we’ll also see the chronologically relevant material from the Iron Islands in this season, as well.
As for season three… I’m looking forward to pretty much all of it. Especially interested to see how they implement Riverrun, the Reed siblings, Stannis’ family, and Ramsay Snow (…never Snow…) into this season. Which is another thing some people seem to be forgetting about this season – there is a lot of material from ACoK we’ll be seeing this year. I think they made the right decision to push the introduction of these characters back, personally. The first two seasons were crowded enough as they were.
I guess my main hope for this coming season and the next is that they take their time and don’t rush through the quieter moments just to get to the big ones (as it seems a lot of people would prefer). The characters all go through a lot of changes in ASoS, and that’s always been my favorite thing about the book, so hopefully it plays out like this…
Season 3: ASoS up to the aftermath of the Red Wedding, with the characters and plots pushed back from ACoK.
Season 4: The remainder of ASoS, with the chronologically relevant material from Dorne and the Iron Islands in AFfC/ADwD. Ends roughly where the third book does, although it may extend a little beyond (i.e. Tyrion arrives in Pentos).

So do you think Bran will stay with the three-eyed crow beyond the Wall? I find it hard to believe that the Reeds & Hodor would stay there with him forever, and if they leave I think Bran would want to leave as well. But could they survive a trip back?
Moreover, do you all think we’ll meet Howland Reed in the next 2 books? He’s the only one still alive who knows what happened at the Tower of Joy. Unless he told Meera and Jojen (like he did about the Tourney at Harrenhall)?

This woman thinks that Bran has a specific goal while training with the 3-eyed crow, and perhaps will stay there only through the long winter with his companions to emerge in the Spring and return to Winterfell with more powers and knowledge that will help his family recover from the traumas of the harsh winter they have endured in order to help the realm renew itself and move into an era of peace and prosperity with a benevolent ruler after vanquishing the powers of evil. It’s been too long since I’ve read SoS for me to have any sense of clarity about the timeframe, are we certain there would be enough material to fill 9 hours if they do that? I had thought Joff’s death could take place around the midpoint, like Viserys’ E6 (?) death in S1.
But putting it in the first episode would set the tone nicely for the season, so if they could make it work without the season feeling a bit empty in the middle episodes I’d be all for it.

Well I agree with the second half of that statement. I know it would be a little out of the time line from the book, (if they’re separating it into 2 seasons) but that epilogue is a perfect way to end the 3rd season. The outlaws are questioning Merrett Frey and….“She don’t speak,” said the big man in the yellow cloak. “You bloody bastards cut her throat too deep for that. But she remembers.” He turned to the dead woman and said, “What do you say, m’lady? Was he part of it?”
Lady Catelyn’s eyes never left him. She nodded.
Merrett Frey opened his mouth to plead, but the noose choked off his words. His feet left the ground, the rope cutting deep into the soft flesh beneath his chin. Up into the air he jerked, kicking and twisting, up and up and up…..and as the screen fades to black all you hear is the gurgling, and choking of a dying Frey.

I wonder how they’ll capture Cat’s bemused state of mind at the RW–or if they’ll even try? It was such a subtle approach in the book, as we watched through her eyes and her moods. In a way, it had a softening effect–at least at first. And then, as the reality of the wedding hit, your devastation, like hers, was total. I have to say that I dread this scene. Even thinking about it gives my gut an adrenalin punch (and I don’t mean that in a nice way)!

Joffs death cant be on the first episode of season 4 because first they have to introduce oberyn martell, the tension between the tyrells and martells. I think it will happen around episode 6. I really hope they use only the material from a SOS on season 4 because our dear George writes incredible stuff but really slow and i think D&D know this so they willl exploit each book.

That’s a pretty huge number of episodes to be introducing Oberyn Martell, without a whole lot going on. I’m expecting them to introduce Oberyn in episode 1 and then kill Joffrey in episoded. And there will be significant AFFC material in season 4.
On a side note, I find it strange that we seem to spend more time predicting the pace for season 4 than for season 3. We need to bring back the ‘scripting episode X’ posts!

Can we hope for a twist where Talisa gets killed as well? Given the way they changed her character from the book there’s really no point in keeper her alive. Every minute she is on screen does injustice to the entire storyline. I would like to know who was the brilliant person at HBO that thought a marriage between Robb Stark and a family sworn the to Lannisters should be replaced with this foolish girl who comes to Westeros because she’s against slavery. It will either be one giant ass tome. Or it will be a two part series. Maybe even a trilogy. I wrote what will probably be the second book back in the early 2000′s. It was almost 700 pages but I still needed to do a final draft. I got too involved in my 3rd and 4th year of university to work on the final draft and by the time that I felt like writing again, I found myself not as happy with the basic story as I was before. I tried many times to rewrite it but life and my own laziness kept getting in the way. There was no way I could leave the story as it was. My learning experience during university made me see the world in a lot of different ways and I felt that my voice was too naive. I had to adjust it, make it more than what it was. Anyway, here I am now suddenly struck with the creative force again and it seems to be flowing.
Essentially it is a post apocalyptic science fiction epic detailing the rise and fall of a great empire that has conquered the known world. Thrown in some with fantasy overtones. My chief inspiration was my own passion for imperial Rome and the novel series The Masters of Rome by Colleen McCullough (the GRRM of Ancient Rome) as well as the works of George Orwell, Aldous Huxley and most importantly Frank Herbert’s Dune series and Walther M Mitchell’s novel A Canticle For Liebowitz. There’s a strong neoclassicism about this futuristic society but the dynastic and religious struggles present in the Dune series and the grittiness and Dickensian nature of ASOIAF is also present as well as the dystopian philosophies of Orwell, Huxley and even Philip K Dick.
That’s all I can say about it at the moment. :-)

I remember talking with you about McCullough and her series, wich I really like, and of course everyone loves (or should love!) Dune, Orwell (have you read Homage to Catalonia?) Huxley and Dick (well, Dick is a bit problematic for me) but I never heard about Walther M. Mitchell or A Canticle For Liebowitz. I’ll be sure to check that out.
I think taking into account the epic scope of your story it will fit better into trilogy than in a standalone tome. Also came to my mind The Malazan Book of the Fallen, but I’m not sure if that is what you’r aiming for…I didn’t really connect with the characers and let that series go halfway through the second book.
Anyway, I wish you the best of lucks and I’d be delighted to read it sometimes, be it in it’s published form, or as a manuscript ;)

All of the scenes in season 3 will epic. Book 3 is by far the best book of the series so far. But my favourite scene in book 3 is right at the end. The scene with Sansa, Lysa and Littlefinger… you all know what scene i mean!! Obvs it will be moved to season 4 of the T.V show as the Red Viper hasn’t been cast and he is present at Joffreys wedding which happens well before this scene. But still, i can’t wait for it.
Sansa is my favourite character. I know not a lot of fans like her, but i seriously can’t wait for the direction her story going in. Plus, Littlefinger is so intriguing.

The end of a storm of swords shocked be a little bit. When Arya dreamt that nymeria found catelyn stark by the river and the men came i knew something would happened. When catelyn resurrected i thought that the men in the dream was the outlaws because she was with them in the end of the book. But how is Catelyn alive? When one of the outlaws said ” it’s my turn to be Beric Dondarrion” my first thought was that he has died his last death. So i think Beric gave his life for the resurrection of Catelyn, and the priest made his God take Beric’s life for Catelyn’s.
