English actor Mark Killeen has been cast in the role of Mero, the Titan’s Bastard, for season 3 of Game of Thrones.
He has appeared in such films as The Dark Knight Rises, Rise of the Footsoldier, and the upcoming sequel, 300:Rise of an Empire, and on several British television shows including Doctor Who and Waking the Dead. Killeen played the role of Vincent Catalano in the feature, The Callback Queen, a film with a character in fact based on George R.R. Martin. This caused some unintended speculation here in May of 2011, after Martin referenced the movie on his blog.
Mero, a Braavosi nicknamed the Titan’s Bastard, is captain of a sellsword company called the Second Sons. Daenerys meets the captain during her travels in Essos. According to the actor’s CV, he’ll be appearing in episode 8, directed by Michelle MacLaren.
UPDATE: It looks like Killeen has upload a photo of himself in costume as Mero to IMDb.

IMDB says that he is gonna appears in 3×08..I think it’s fake, I doubt all the stuff in Astapor and Dracarys would be resolved in 7 episodes, I would guess episode 9 or 10
MichelQuote Reply
Michel,
It’s not fake. It’s on his Spotlight CV as well. It’s likely that they’ve combined some aspects and that Dany won’t be in all three cities.
Ours is the FuryQuote Reply
Astapor is only one chapter in the book. It’s not that much to wrap up.
Also, in the correcting things I don’t in the least bit care about department, my understanding is that this 300 cash grab is prequel not a sequel.
WatsonQuote Reply
Ours is the Fury,
I don’t see why that need change anything. They could easily get through the Astapor plot in seven episodes:
Ep. 1: Assination attempt, Dany gets ships
Ep. 2: Jorah comes up with the unsullied plan.
Ep. 4: Arrival in Astapor, introduction of Unsullied.
Ep. 5: Purchase of Unsullied, Dracarys.
Ep. 6: Dany leaves Astapor in the hands of a council
Ep. 8: Yunkai subplot.
Ep. 10: Outriders find the first slave child nailed to a door.
That makes for a fine arc, and includes all three cities.

So who fights him?
I say Dany’s sister Daario.

Damryn of DorneQuote Reply
sunspear,
I think that the Yunkai/sellsword plot will take up episodes 6-9, and that Daenerys’ storyline will end with her departing Yunkai, and saying that they are heading towards Meereen.
I think that they will save the road to Meereen for episodes 1-4 of season 4, the siege of Meereen for episodes 5-8, the Jorah-Barristan reveals for episode 9, and the sack of Meereen for episode 10
Ser TahuQuote Reply
A sequel is a subsequent movie in a series. Prequel’s just a type of sequel. But really I don’t care. :)
I assume that Barristan fights off Mero’s assassination attempt as he does in the book.

Mero is ‘The Titan’s Bastard’. He was the captain of the Second Sons in the book. The Braavosi are former slaves from Valyria. Valyrians are white, if I’m not mistaken(just look at the Targaryens). Braavos isn’t so isolated that it is one single race. The only characters that need to be non-white are the Martells,Summer Islanders, and those with Ghiscari blood(Slaver’s Bay).

Listen, I’m so tired of this race baiting. History didn’t begin and end with the Civil War. The Romans and South Americans made slaves out of all races. Any colored skin at all that was defeated by another society was ripe for subjugation. I know that some races are portrayed as people of color who have been subjugated by white people. I hate to break it to you but white people aren’t white. They are people of color as well. Anyone American who descends from the peoples of Europe are not white people. They are Euro-Americans who had ancestry of slaves in their past. Just as Americans who descends from African ancestors are Afro-Americans who are slave ancestry in their past. Same with Hispanic Americans whom history teaches as having ancestor enslaved in the past. So let’s all live together people. The backstory of Essos and our own history is bigger than us all.

Yes, I agree that our history is bigger than us all; but the theme of slavery and Dany’s efforts to erase it are definitely part of what make ASOIAF a very American work of literature. It’s also a mostly non-religious way to make Dany such a messiah figure.
We need more POC in the series, but I’m just as glad that they haven’t made Mero a POC. If we’re going to have more of them, more of them should be good guys.
And the Martells can be white too. Moors aren’t always black. Sean Connery famously played one.

Mero is a one-episode role from what I can tell. Osha and Asha are both long-running characters.
I don’t have a problem with this actor, but it’s worth mentioning that Mero’s description of red hair and green eyes does not automatically make him white. People of color often don’t just have brown hair/brown eyes. I would like to see more variety in the cast in terms of race and ethnicity but especially in Westeros. There’s no reason to keep everyone who isn’t white over in Essos. I mean, it’s a fantasy world.
I would ask that everyone, regardless of their opinion of the show’s casting when it comes to skin color, please be civil in your discussion here. Personal attacks are not permitted.

You know, I’ve been thinking about that. After season 3, there are a lot of characters that have nothing to do for season 4:
Osha and Rickon will likely go off on their own to Skagos.
Edmure, the Blackfish, and Talisa drop out until the siege of Riverrun in late AFFC.
Hot pie vanishes after the inn, Gendry vanishes when Arya is captured, and the Brotherhood has only one scene with Uncat.
I wonder if David and Dan will bother making up added scenes for all of them.

As far as the Asha/Osha and Mero/Meera conversation:
Asha and Osha are pronounced exactly the same out loud, which is how characters are identified on a show. You’re not likely to see them wearing a name tag. Also, they’re both grimy looking, 20-30-something caucasian females that have storylines centered in the North, and even more specifically, at Winterfell. If I hadn’t read the books, maybe even I would get those two confused.
On the other hand, MEE-ra and MARE-o don’t sound the same out loud, and one of them is a 15 year old pale girl riding around in the North with Bran, while the other is a presumably tan (even if white), muscular man who is out in the desert with Dany. Not a whole lot of chance that people are going to get them confused.
HislocalQuote Reply
They can play with the hidden identity plot – let the audience know (because, well, it would be hard to do otherwise) that Whitebeard is Barristan, but not Dany or Jorah. This would create a nice tension and anticipation for the inevitable reveal and the problems coming with it – after all, we know Barristan knows Jorah was an informant.
If they REALLY play it up, it could become a timebomb. I’d love to watch it.

Besides, Mero was such a evil bastard that I despised his character. I look

and their illustrious commanders (give credit where due )like Brown Ben Plumm.
Most of these guys had sordid histories and did unspeakable acts, but they

I’m guessing Dany’s plotline’ll be
Ep 1. Ambush at docks, introducing Arstan/Selmy
Ep 2. Boat journey to Astapor, after changing course from Pentos
Ep 3. Arrival at Astapor, meeting master slaver
Ep 4. Daenerys looking for advice on Unsullied from Jorah and Barristan
Ep 5. Asks slaver for Unsullied, offering Drogon for it
Ep 6. Dracarysing outta there
Ep 7. Dany travelling and arriving at Yunkai, organising a meeting with the Sellsword captains
Ep 8. Daenerys’ meeting with the sellsword captains (Mero introduced here)
Ep 9. I doubt she’ll appear here, a lot of focus will be on the RW and stuff
Ep 10. Battle at Yunkai, whole Mysha scene and all
it’s looking like a very typical Game of Thrones structure for her arc this season!

The rest of your argument is correct (e.g. Meera and Mero being hard to confuse as they’re different genders and on different continents etc). Also, your point of the names being easy to confuse, is essentially correct (and is the reason why they changed it the Yara, as stated in interviews).
BUT I’ll be pedantic – the pronunciation of Osha and Asha is only the same for Americans (and even then, by no means all Americans).
For the rest of the English-speaking world, the O and A are pronounced quite differently – including in the various British accents used by actors in the show.
As an Australian, I’d pronounce them /ɒʃə/ and /æʃə/ respectively. (And if you want to avoid your transcriptions being misinterpreted, go read this ;) – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPA).

Since the Asha/Yara-gate is up again and running, I have a little game for you. A game I’m sure it’ll clear things up.
Find some friends of yours who consider themselves devoted fans of GoT but haven’t red the books. Ask them one simple question: “What is the name of Theon’s sister”.
If more than half of them answer “Yara”, just keep it and start sleeping again.
If more than half of them answer “I don’t know”, then it doesn’t really matter.
I tried that game and out of 6 people I scored:
1 “Yana”,
4 “I don’t remember” and
1 “The Greyjoy chick that needs a bath”.
6 out of 6 don’t have a clue. With so many characters around and a nine months hiatus, for them it makes no difference. The only people who keep bringing that on are book readers who can’t imagine a universe where character names can be altered between book and TV. Well…

When Martin has talked about names, he’s been very clear that he doesn’t like to tell people what they are — that it is really up to the reader.
That said, when the show started, there was a slew of times he came out and said certain names how he hears them. Most of them are not how I say them, but I totally say every name as close to their real world analog — so Lysa is Lee-suh, not LIE-suh; Petyr is simply like our Peter, not Pay-TEAR, etc.
I remember somewhere that Martin or Ran or someone in the know commented that Aegon was an exception for the pronunciation rules and was actually pronounced Egg-on. Not Egg..pause..On, but fast — Eggon. I also remember not liking that very much. I can’t find the link — it may be in video — but I’m like 70% sure it’s true.
(I mentally say A gone with a long A like I am saying the letter, not Ay-gonn or Eggon.)

Without going and looking it up, I’d be fairly confident that the “o” sound has the most diverse variations of any vowel in English. I have a student from Scotland, who pronounces the vowels in “pour”, “poor” and “paw” all differently (and he pronounces the Rs, whereas we don’t). The rest of the class (all Australians) though that was hilarious, as we pronounce all 3 exactly the same… (as /pɔ:/)
Also, when I say “Barbie”, most Americans assume I mean “Bobby”…

it was a crow that flew to the Frostfangs instead of the States. Honestly. I
have no idea if a raven had any instruction to come my way. Is this another

OK, blah blah blah… Can we please get to the most important thing, here? Women, we have some new man candy to drool over next season! (for a short time, at least). :-)
Now, who’s hunkier: Jaqen H’ghar or Mero, aka: the Titan’s Bastard? Discuss…
