I think it is fair to say that the animated histories were the consensus best part of the Game of Thrones season one Blu-rays. Well, there are 19 all-new animated histories on this year’s Blu-ray set and we’ve got your first look at one of those features. It is the “History of the Alchemists’ Guild”, narrated by Roy Dotrice as Wisdom Hallyne.
Game of Thrones: The Complete Second Season releases February 19 on DVD and Blu-ray combo pack
(Blu-ray, DVD and digital download).
Winter Is Coming: Can’t wait to get my hands on these Blu-rays. I wonder what other histories they will include? The history of the Greyjoys seems likely. Maybe a history of Harrenhal. Any other histories you would like to see?

Oh well, this seems like good stuff.

Too early to get something dealing with the Faceless Men?

rossart was hand for a fortnight, hardly something to boast about Hallyne!!

Certainly loved Season One’s histories and I’m looking forward to Season Two’s!!
I would guess we will get Grejoys as suggested, I would love histories on the Faceless Men, but I doubt that will happen this year. Maybe Season 4?
Perhaps we will get some info on the Qarth warlocks and the House of the Undying?

Glad to see that Best Buy finally got around to making the Greyjoy and Lannister bluray sleeves available, but what about the Baratheon sleeve? Lannister would do if there wasn’t one but if not this year when would a Baratheon sleeve be available? Robert and Renly are both dead and Stannis changed his sigil. If anyone could fill me in that would be great cause I have already had to cancel one preorder, would rather not have to cancel again if that were to become available.
And yes, the histories were the best part of the season 1 bluray. I supppose the Tyrell history will be making an appearance.

Toast,
I saw this pohoto of the Baratheon cover posted on DVDTalk that supposedly was from a Spanish BD site called Mubis.es , but I could not find the Baratheon cover on the site. I do not speak panish so I admit my search was limited. XD
I have yet to see any site or store that has that cover available, but it could be out there in theory…..
Therre a number of Spanish sites that seem to promote the 3 limited covers ….

I think the most likely history is one of the Ghiscari Empire and Old Ghis, to give more explanation to non-book readers about the history of Slaver’s Bay and that area.

Mm. Listening to Roy speak again is wonderful. I first read the books via audiobook, so he is quintessentially Song of Ice and Fire to me. I calmed right down listening to that. Makde my day better.
Only a few weeks to release, too. Happy me.

Watson,
Well, wildfire is green fire that burns on water, not that hard to recognize if you ask me. ;-)
Besides, Davos is a sailor and wildfire is THE weapon against ships (like his real-world match greek fire), it’s even possible, that he saw it at some point.

Darquemode,
That Baratheon cover was likely a fake. There is no Baratheon cover. I agree that it was an oversight by HBO not to launch a Baratheon stag cover this year.

Wow, that was cool. A woman must consider purchasing a BlueRay package now, as these look well worth the extra buckage.

didn’t the season 1 Blu ray cover this about as much as GRRM has revealed up to now? I remember a lot about the Valyrian conquest of Ghis and the discovery of Dragons..

He grew up in Kings Landing during the Aerys years, not far-fetched to think that he saw it in some form when the pyromancers were at their height. Or, like was said above, it’s probably something that any sailor would want to familiarize themselves with.

Hmm….. always knew those Alchemists favored those Targaryeons.
A history of Harrenhal and the Greyjoys would be most welcomed ( AND perhaps
a brief explanation of the Maejyors of Volantis, if they exist anyway ).
Is there a history feature for the Red God ? Faceless Men ? Wargs and GreenSeers ?

So happy to hear Roy Dotrice reading for ASOIAF again!! Listened to all the audio books while in the work van and he is a master at reading the books aloud (changing voices for different characters). I was a little upset when I didn’t hear his voice on AFFC, but was pleasantly surprised when he returned for ADWD…..If you haven’t listened to the audio book versions I highly suggest you do. It helps me refresh for every season:)
KlavonivsQuote Reply
And this is why I should watch special features more often. If they find clever ways to cram backstory into the extras that they don’t have time for in the show, that’s always a good idea.
ZackQuote Reply
Well, you could read the books and then the Egg&Dunk novellas. That’ll cover pretty much all the story about the Red God, the Faceless Men, Wargs and Greenseers :-)
Spoilers ahead (Up to AFFC (season 5)) :
As for the animated series… you’ll probably have to wait for next seasons. We had almost nothing about Wargs for now on the show, but in seasons 3 and 4 Bran will start warging like hell, it’s possible that the DVDs will then show more details on warging. Same for the greenseers, you’ll have to wait for the apparition of Jojen to have more details on it on the series universe. The Faceless Men are probably coming in season 4 dvd when Arya will be badassing everythin (like always) on Braavos. And I don’t know for sure, but I think it’s probable that the a Red God featurette will be present in the season 2 blu-ray.
More spoilers, now concerning ADWD (season 5 or 6)
Concerning the Maegyrs of Volantis… Well if you’re thinking of this because Talisa is called Talisa Maegyr, I’m sorry to disappoint you.. First, in the books, she doesn’t exists. Robb’s wife is called Jeyne Westerling, she’s a westerosi noble women of the West. But she actually has a great-grandmother who comes from Essos and was a Maegi (Maggy the Frog) (Maegi =/= Maegyr, a Maegi is just some sort of witch… like Mirri Maz Duur who killed Khal Drogo in season 1) . But that’s all. Even their personalities are pretty much different. Jeyne is an annoying little brat in the books.
Yet, there’s a character in the books that lives in Volantis and is called Maegyr. Malaquo Maegyr… and he’s actually one of the three rulers of the City. So Talisa maybe not just a simple noble… but pretty much a really important noble women daughter of one of the rulers in the Old and still powerful city-state of Volantis.
But yeah… nothing she doesn’t exists in the books. And we will only get more details on Volantis when book 5 gets adapted.

First went the cakes. then the strawberry trifle, then the lemon cakes, then the honey chicken kebabs, then the secret sherbet I kept hidden from Renly. We drank Robert’s stash because a drunk like him can always find more. Then came the dancing bear who made quite a nice roast until we realised there was nothing left. It got so bad we had to force ourselves to eat like commoners, eating stale bread and making fruit juice out of chalk. Then we ate the commoners. The horror of it all!
We were f**ked from then on.

My guess is that we’ll get some Greyjoy history (maybe both a House Greyjoy history video and a Greyjoy Rebellion), also one on the Tyrells… perhaps something about the Siege of Storm’s End and on the Lord of Light and the Prince That Was Promised

Actually, the Maegyrs are a Volantene family… in A Dance With Dragons a Triarch called Malaquo Maegyr is mentioned

Nice foreshadowing. Much like S1′s history of House Lannister set the stage for The Rains of Castamere in S2, I think this more or less confirms that Jaime’s confession will be in S3.

I love the animated histories. Since the books have so much background information, that you could not possibly fit into the show, this is just perfect.

I can only presume that the histories will be related to the characters featured most, or new characters. So there will probably be some relating to:
Melisandre (Asshai, Lord of Light)
Stannis (History of Dragonstone, Storm’s End)
Harrenhal
Greyjoy Rebellion
Beyond the wall, stuff about the fist of the first men, Crastor
Quarth, Red Waste, HotU, Warlocks

It’s a departure from their normal SOP both in that they tend to run seasonal promos (Here’s our spring lineup!) and they don’t generally run untargeted promos — you don’t really see them spending millions on it to reach a general audience, which is what the Super Bowl is.
If true, it shows they really think the show could be enormous — a Sopranos level of appeal. But I’m skeptical.

Kell,
Umm….. Thanks. I read all the Dunk & Egg novellas, loved the insights gained
about the Targaryeon ancestry and various Sigils. Aside from Bloodraven,
Greenseer and Warg facts were FEW. I gained more insight from watching the
Animated History Shorts, such as these ones featured in this subject post.
The comment about about Talisa was really ” tongue in cheek “, as she only
exists in the GoT series. Perhaps I should have included Roz, then you’d
realise the jest (?). Volantis, on the other hand, is real in the ASOIAF universe.
I did not however, equate Maggie the Frog with Maegi, nor Talisa Maegyr,
but hey, you read that somewhere, right ? So far the only fact I’m aware of,
regarding Talisa , is her authentic Volantene last name. At least the
script writers included that and proved a nice touch of authenticity. Do
you have a handy reference for Roz too ?
In the series, Mirri Maz Duur plays the role of a Maegi, that I’m aware of,
but I would not doubt there’s more information out there…….

Tom O’ Sevens,
In the animated video Hallyne(Dotrice) mentions all of the pyromancers that went missing after the city was taken. As book readers know, Jaime killed them to prevent them from following through with Aerys’ plan to burn down the city. Jaime reveals this info to Brienne in the bathtub scene from ASOS.
