Nikolaj Coster-Waldau on Jaime Lannister’s love life and season 3

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau appeared yesterday on the program George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight to promote his new film Mama and shared his thoughts on Jaime Lannister’s complicated romance with his sister.

Nikolaj also visited Access Hollywood Live on Thursday and had this to say about Game of Thrones‘ upcoming third season:

“I can say this much: I love doing that show,” Nikolaj added. “It’s just amazing, the writing is amazing. When we started, I was just praying we would make it to Season 3 because that was my — that was the season… where everything — a lot of great things happen.”

Ours is the Fury: Nikolaj has some good points about Jaime and Cersei’s relationship being one of the few on the show not created for political reasons. His enthusiasm for the show and his character is apparent in all of Nikolaj’s interviews.

I think that Strombo interview really nails it down for newcomers of this genre. For too long fantasy has been mired into this tolkien archtypes of good vs evil. Hopefully new fans realize this show isn’t about the fantasy gimmicks of magic and dragons but real characters and not caricatures.

PS: I cannot wait till newbies flip their tables at the conclusion of season 3, i think GoT will become even more notorious somehow (hopefully it’ll translate to a higher budget for more episodes or cgi).

Yes, but, don’t forget, the episodes will run longer and D&D said it will add up to “another full episode’s worth of extra minutes spread across the season.”

Gahhh I love that man, and I love his character (Jaime is my absolute favorite ASOIAF character!)

I seriously can’t wait to see his story arc come alive on screen this season! I really feel like Book 3 was kind of “Jaime’s” book, and I’m hoping they’ll stay true to it and that Season 3 will be “Jaime’s” season :) (Not that other characters don’t have crucial or interesting storylines. But it’s such a pivotal character development piece of Jaime, and it’s the point where he really gets to shine as a character and win the hearts of the readers!)

Yep. I could actually see D&D taking on more episodes as they either (a) get better/more experienced at show running or (b) find people they trust to delegate more work to.

They went from writers — and movie/book writers, not TV writers — to showrunners, which is just so much more work. They are bound to eventually get better and quicker at it.

Where that time will go — more on screen minutes or just simply higher quality work in the time we have — is a question.

You know, I’ve re-read the Song of Ice and Fire series, oh, five times now?

The first few times reading the books through, I despised the character of Jame Lannister.

But over time, that opinion changed, and now he is easily my favorite character in the series. What can I say? I am a sucker for a good redemption story…

Jaime is a very interesting narrator, but the subleties of his observations and his journey are often lost in the aftershock of the “ZOMG KINGSLAYING KIDSLAYING AND TWINCEST” revelations. Not to mention, all of the characters that the reader is initially drawn to feel sympathy for – Ned Stark, Robert Baratheon, etc – despise Jaime. So naturally, the reader feels a deep bias against him.

Over time I’ve come to realize that Jaime is just as intelligent as Tyrion. He is easily the most empathetic and observant of Tywin’s children, and possibly the most damaged. This is difficult to reconcile with his violent history, so most readers/viewer write him off too early as a one-dimensional villain.

I’m glad to see that NCW reads the books and understands the depth of the character he is playing.

Jamie is definitely in my top three characters as well. There is just so much more to him than meets the eye. His story is one of the most interesting and compelling and I really want him to play a large role in the grand scheme of things. I know that no else seems to feel this way but I feel like Jaime is one of the top contenders for being azor ahai. It’s just my theory but we’ll see.

Agreed. I actually started watching GOT because I am a huge NCW fan. When I saw his photo on Entertainment Weekly, I wanted to see the show, but I was a little apprehensive about a fantasy show. Good interview. But, he is wrong about saying that Jaime and Cersei are the only relationship that’s not politically driven. There is Renly and Loras. There is Tyrion and Shae. There is Robb and Talisa. There is Jon and Ygritte. They are all matches that’s driven by love and lust. They also have something else in common and that there is a barrier to the relationship which causes conflict.

I can understand Nikolaj’s need to feel that the relationship is special and to help humanize and therefore make his character more relatable for him. But, Jaime is a bastard. (Although Jaime becomes more likeable later in the books, at least in my eyes.)

    Darker than white,

Agree! Jaime’s isn’t the only true love/lust relationship. And Ned didn’t really have a choice when he beheaded poor Will – Will was a deserter of the NW and if you desert that’s the punishment. Cold weather, crappy food, snarks, grumpkins and no sex – everyone would desert if there wasn’t a severe punishment for doing so.
Agree about Jaime being a bastard too. They used to tell us in Catholic school that there are 4 kinds of people: saints (usually martyrs like Ned) who will go straight to Heaven; good people with human failings (like Tyrion, Robb, Robert, Cat, Jon, Dany, etc.) who will go to Purgatory (the holding area where you must atone for your sins on Earth) – but only for a short time; there are also people who have committed grave sins but manage to turn it around in the end (like Jaime) – who will go to Purgatory – but for a very long time; and finally there are those like Joffrey and the Boltons - who are going straight to Hell. I think Jaime has a long wait in Purgatory, unless God turns out to be a woman – in which case She will be so charmed by him, that She will probably let him off easy :)))!

I watched Mama yesterday and really loved it. The whole thing with the girls was unique albeit the background storyline being super cliche. The Mama ghost was quite terrifying. And, I’m sorry, children crawling and/or humming is the scariest shit in the world. There were also some solid jumpscares. Fun fact: NCW plays two characters in the movie – identical twins. I thought that was pretty funny.

One small note, I expected Nikolaj to be the main character. The focus is really on his girlfriend throughout the movie. That actress played her part really well. The one thing this movie had going for it was some quality acting, especially from the kids. That said, it’s not a masterpiece, but it made me jump and I’m not a jumper at all. I left extremely satisfied and from the murmurings of the other people around me, it seemed they felt similarly.

Jessica Chastain is a wonderful actress, but in “Zero Dark Thirty” she goes beyond wonderful, and is simply amazing! That scene in the movie (if you’ve seen it it will make sense) where she gets asked where she wants to go…and then has no answer, one look at her face and you can pretty much see the entire movie summed up then and there in that look of loss and pain…and personal price paid for all she had to do and sacrifice! I don’t want to demean the other actresses competing against her this award season, but there is simply no equal to what she was able to bring to her role!

I tried to express why I liked “Zero Dark Thirty” on other forums, but predictably I got my arse kicked by being simultaneously called a “fascist, nazi, right wing American apologist” and also “a dirty hippie, commie bastard”…and all that for liking a movie…hmmm.

It’s funny because the movie doesn’t really pick a side politically IMHO, it just lays out the events. I don’t give a crap about politics or the morality of torture in the film, it’s a well written, well directed and well acted film. And that’s all that matters to me. Wish the rest of the world could see things that way but…haters gonna hate.

And I agree that in that scene “where do you want to go”, was devastating because Maya like be audience realizes that “ok so we just took out the engineer of 3000 + deaths in the the US and elsewhere thousands more, and it doesn’t heal the wound, it doesn’t return the the time and resources spent, the emotional energy. In the end all we are left with is a pathetic, sick old man in a bodybag.

Chastain was amazing. But kudos to Jason Clarke as well. I loved him in Brotherhood and am happy to see him get more roles.
