The HBO On Demand site has updated listings for the coming month which reveal the date the trailer for Game of Thrones season three is set to be available… February 25. Assuming this follows the general convention of going up the day after it airs, we can presume that the full trailer will air on HBO on February 24.
Additionally, a feature called “About Game of Thrones” is set to hit On Demand on Feb. 18. This is a 3 minute long video that promises to let viewers “delve inside the world of ‘Game of Thrones’ in this compelling overview of this fascinating new HBO series.” [UPDATE: Sadly, this looks to be a re-upload of an old S1 promo.]
Winter Is Coming: I’m very surprised that HBO is waiting this long to air a full trailer for a new season of one of their most anticipated shows. It is possible that the trailer could debut online a week or two ahead of time (Entertainment Weekly exclusively debuted the season one trailer online). But assuming that does not happen, it looks like we will have to wait another two weeks to see the trailer.

That’s still more than a month before the premiere, and I’d rather wait a little longer for one (hopefully) awesome trailer than be inundated with too many that give too much away. The show’s already the most-buzzed-about thing they have (ratings not as high as TB but critical consensus more than makes up the difference IMO). There’s too much spoilage potential and I think if we’d gotten one earlier people would already be demanding another with more footage. Best keep some mystery. I suspect that the hyperbolic floodgates will swing wide in March.

Well, I think last year was a bit of an overkill … I’d actually rather they show us as little content as possible than to give us a new trailer every week, not to mention all the other stuff like character featurettes and invitations to the set (of course … I could avoid watching all of those … but I simply didn’t have the strength) . And besides; at this point they have a huge fan base working for them which imo is better than any marketing campaign.

My opinion, they are simply behind this year. Shooting all these locations Iceland included, as well as going back to LA to shoot another scene = late post production = late trailer. Lest not forget HBO is marketing Girls now and want to promote this new thing in pop culture (whether you like the show or not). Secondly it’s trailer to a television series, not a film. I am sure they would make trailers if they had time. Maybe they poured money into the show instead of placing emphasis on marketing for financial reasons and to avoid spoilers leaking for the newbies that don’t go on YouTube or anywhere on the Internet.
If anything this only builds up the excitement. I have a feeling the trailer will be of the Seven Devils caliber or maybe even greater.

Could it be that they’ve been having problems in post-production? We know they had to do re-shoots in L.A. for the first time, as well as shooting in Iceland with the stunt teams. It takes a lot of time to edit the Ireland scenes to mesh with Central Park, and the Moroccan and Icelandic footage so that the New York City skyline is visible over the Wall and the ramparts of Astapor.

HBO has done such a superlative job in the previous seasons that we have gotten spoiled. Having a trailer 5 or 6 weeks before a season premiere is not out of bounds at all. Add in the fact that we have had two behind-the-scenes videos already too. If this were any other channel than HBO that would be a bumper crop of promotional material!
That said, I do miss the overabundance of material from the last two years!

I wonder if the late date of the trailer also has to do with the release of season 2 DVD/blu-ray, which is the 19th? Maybe HBO found last year that enough people were less inclined to buy a ‘dated’ season if they are too hyped for the new season by seeing the upcoming season trailer. To those people who say that last season HBO overdid it with the promotion, and why should they, this year slow it down:
*Trailers are the best way to atract new viewers. They got me last year in february with the riddle trailer. GoT still has to reach its potential in viewership.
*More trailers the better, since creates excitement and anticipation, not only for us who are familiar with the show, but for others. With the help of trailers from previous years I managed to convince 3 other friends to watch the whole show, and now are fans.
*In comparison, The Walking Dead (also at S3) are booming with advertisement. In the mid-season break they did some hugely amount of promo.
*As a fact: on the Facebook, GoT has 4.8 mil likes growing with 11.000-12.000 likes every 2 days. Walking Dead has 14.6 mil likes, growing 100 K every 2 days!! and it’s increasing because of the unusual amount of advetisement for the show! (I count daily – call me crazy)
Bottom line, advertisement, in whatever amount is good! And HBO should have started the promotional campaigh for GoT earlier. But maybe they couldn’t because of technical things unknown to us! Either way, I’m almost going crazy right now, and only this kind of news posted on this site, keep me going!

I can’t for the life of me understand all those complaints about the trailer “being late”. WHO CARES? Is there a single person who watched the first two seasons that needs a trailer to remember to watch or to get excited almost 2 months before the premiere? I’ll give you that the trailers for the past seasons have been awesome, but you know what’s more awesome? Watching a great scene in Season 3 without it being “spoiled” 3 months in advance. AMC isn’t a premium network, and The Walking Dead isn’t a very good show, so I wouldn’t worry too much about how many Facebook likes the individual series have. Game of Thrones, cumulatively, averages around 11 million viewers, which makes it HBO’s third most popular series of all-time behind True Blood and The Sopranos. I’d say we can expect the overall viewership to increase again this season.
And for everyone speculating about whether an actual trailer has been delayed due to issues with the production and/ or post-production… It’s incredibly unlikely, and somewhat ‘the sky is falling’-ish in nature. I said it before, and I’ll say it again – I’d rather have one really good trailer than what we got in the first season, and (to a much lesser extent) the second season. Personally, I’m more excited about the behind-the-scenes feature.

Damn. Seriously guys. I also feel the longer we wait, the greater the reward. I think there’s going to be a lot of special effects which they needed to finish off and polish. Which means we get to see nice special effects in the trailer. Plus the lack of pre-season footage doesn’t necessarily mean anything bad about the actual season. AMC is available in over 100 million homes in the US. HBO has around 30 million subscribers in the US. I’d say the 11 million viewers per episode that GOT averaged in season 2 is more impressive than what TWD averaged with such a disparity in the number of households each network is available in. Plus, it doesn’t take much effort to watch TWD. In order to follow GOT you have to watch from the start and pay close attention.

Well, at least there is an established date. Personally I’m not sure why people clamor so much for the trailer–is it just the artistic aesthetic with which it is done they want? Because the various vlogs have thus far featured a lot of footage one would expect to see in a trailer, such as Beric Dondarrion and the Brotherhood with Banners, conversations with Olenna Tyrell and Mance Rayder, the Unsullied, some action shots, etc. Obviously it doesn’t have the artistic aesthetic as the “Seven Devils” Season 2 trailer or whatever but it’s still the type of preview material we are looking for.

Just wondering if anyone who is complaining about how trailers help build excitement and buzz can explain how releasing them earlier builds any more viewership for the March 31st premiere than releasing them 6 weeks out from that time?
If it’s decided that there will be 2 trailers to promote S3, how does having them released in January and February make the marketing any more effective than having them released in February and March?
I would think that if the trailers are effective, then the sooner the audience for them can tune in to the actual show, the better. Air them too far out and you run the risk of people simply forgetting about the premiere.
I like the idea of having an overwhelming ramp up of the anticipation for March 31st beginning 6 weeks out that is a more concentrated marketing blitz culminating in the premiere as opposed to parceling out smaller bits months and months in advance.

Nope. As Hounded says they are creating buzz for the show by delaying the trailer. There may be a select few who will be pissed off but those ones complain about everything so there’s no need to pacify them. I imagine they probably want to include some finished CGI in the trailer as well, so it won’t look as rough. They are hyping things up by teasing because they know they are putting their all
into the trailer. HBO is very aware what they are doing and how popular the show is. It’s a gamble I suppose but it’s one that can pay off quite well.

Probably a lot of spoilerish stuff makes it hard to edit a trailer, probabaly went through the process a half dozen times until they all agreed there was no spoilers it. Think of all the arc’s and who shows up where and when. Tyrion, Sansa, Whitebeard, Davos, NW, Theon, Clegane, Arya, Freys, Boltons, Cat, Rob, even Bran and his new friends. All have “reveals” to them that the show runners may want to save for first airing. I predict the trailer will be hyper paced with a ton of half second clips that show alot of nothing with one or two well delivered lines of dialogue.

There is nothing worse then seeing a trailer for a show 3 months before it airs, take video game trailers for example, they are released a year before the game is actually out. This follows hype, after hype after hype. The waiting game is a pain in the bum!

I prefer the later airing – as long as they don’t go OTT with trailers between the 25 and the airing of the first episode.
If they go a decent enough build up of the series – enough to wet the apatite – it will be really easily for them to over delivery for the series and make it much more better.
If they go OTT with trailers, it can build the hype too much and potentially over hype it and make the series feel poor compared to the hype that it got…

As I’ve said before, I’m not surprised they are holding the trailer this long because this is already the biggest home video revenue generator on television. Anticipation is already huge. HBO is slowly generating even more interest by showing as little as possible until a month before the show returns.
This is likely to elevate the overall anticipation levels without burning out that excitement too early.
