Game of Thrones scouting locations in Spain
By Ours is the Fury on in Production, Speculation.

It looks like the world of Game of Thrones is getting even bigger. We have some exciting location news about the fifth season, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly.

According to James Hibberd, the show’s scouts have been looking at locations in the Andalusia region of Spain and they are in “deep in talks with a local film commission.” This will bring the total number of countries the show has filmed in to seven, if the negotiations are successful.

EW is unable to reveal which area of the GoT world Spain may be standing in for.

Ours is the Fury: Andalusia, a territory in the south of Spain, could be standing in for an area of Essos, but the most obvious guess would be that Spain will be Dorne. George R.R. Martin has even cited Spain as one of the main inspirations for the southernmost region of Westeros, with its hot and dry climate and Moorish influence.

    Turncloak,

Braavos was never seen aside from that CGI shot and the internal scenes at the bank. Split is Meereen. There was a city recently revealed as a season 5 location that totally looks like Braavos, though. Sibenik, I think.

Oh and, if they’d go as far as Spain it HAS to mean that they are looking for a very specific type of location. So either they’ve got their eye on a city (to stand in for Sunspear, probably?) or they’ve got a very specific outdoor location (such as dunes, a big river or what have you) that can’t be found anywhere in Croatia, Iceland and Ireland.

Almost forgot… FUCK YES, Dorne is as good as confirmed. The Iron Islands are still endangered, though Yara turning back makes me a bit hopeful.

    Ser Maester,

I don’t see why they would. To age her up? Down? She doesn’t look wrong in any way for the role after these years, and she was a perfectly fine actress for the few lines she had to deliver so far. Also, she has great relationships with the other kids in the cast. It’d be odd to recast her.

This is like a dream come true. I was afraid they were going to use some other place in Croatia (no offense to Croatia, its beautiful), but I’m so glad they’re going for something with a totally different feel.

Here’s my question though: will the addition of Spain mean the subtraction of someplace else? Could Iceland get dropped as a location in season 5? they obviously aren’t gonna be getting rid of Northern Ireland and Croatia. Can they really afford to film in N. Ireland, Croatia, Iceland, and Spain as well. Budget over $100 million next year? I don’t know, maybe the tax incentives and rebates are large enough to offset the expense…

    Sunfyre,

I don’t see why Iceland would be necessary next year, the only North of the Wall scenes would be White Walker ones, and Ross Mullan said they used a surrounding green screen the size of a 4/5story building for that this year. Bran’s underground and Jon only going north for one cuttable scene to initiate some brothers and gain a giant and a wildling

Well, not particulary in Granada or Córdoba (those pics I posted before), but Andalusia has another province, Almería, which indeed has a desert (yeah, with dunes): http://www.google.es/#q=desierto+dunas+almeria&tbm=isch Maybe it isn’t the best dune desert in the world, but it something. I don’t think there are desert-like (as in dunes) features in Spain (but maybe I’m mistaken).

There were Spaghetti Westerns shot in southern Spain. Portraying an arid climate is no problem! There’s even some sand dunes (mostly coastal?) if they want to show the “deep sands” part of the landscape, but even without dunes there’s a lot more to a desert climate than that. Southern Spain ought to be a perfect location for Dorne in general.

  53. Polish

Ok so who won’t have scenes next year to make room for Dorne potential?

Jon // Stannis // Tormund (if survives) // Melisandre // Davos become basically one giant group of people to dedicate scenes to… who knows what they’re gonna do with Davos and Samwell next year.

no mas Hound but Arya still has her time in Braavos anyway. Kings landing will probably get a ton less screen time, but still some, and then we’ll have Tyrion in Essos. And who knows where Jaime will be also.

Ramsay / Reek should only get more time next year (ghost in winterfell stuff… can’t wait for that)

Think the time in show can just come from consolidating the first group of peeps?

It is great that we’re (possibly) getting to see Dorne and all but I hope the scenes are kept to an absolute minimum instead of taking up space from other more interesting story line’s.

“Spain, with its hot an dry climate…”, well, right now we have a temperature of 9 degrees (Celsius) in the north, and it’s actually raining…
But yes, I agree that Andalucia would be a good set for Dorne, mainly due to its arabic architecture more than climate reasons. It could fit for some places in Essos too, but definitely not for Braavos, and the outdoors of the rest of the cities have all already been (at least partially) filmed. So, given it will be for the fifth season, it must be Dorne.

Also, we need bit roles for Arys and Areo as well as a guest appearance by a certain Darkstar. Any ideas?

    Posted May 22, 2014 at 4:08 am | Permalink

    Nick_Scryer,

I think discussing adaptation of FeastDance in terms of how many seasons it will take up isn’t very helpful. I think Cogman said in a WiC interview last year that the material covered in a season of a television show won’t nicely parallel a portion of the book series the way the first three seasons did.

Dany, Sansa, Theon, Bran, and Brienne are either in FeastDance territory already or are quickly approaching it, while other characters will be concluding their third book material this year, and Jon may have some SoS material at the beginning of next year. I think the 4th season pattern of having different characters be at different points in their book storylines will continue for the next couple seasons.

So, yeah, some of the FeastDance material will probably be at the beginning of Season 6, and some of it is already in Season 4. However, that doesn’t mean FeastDance = two seasons, obviously, since a great deal of Season 4 deals with the third book. So discussing exactly how many seasons its going to take to get done with all of FeastDance is a conversation that oversimplifies the adaption process and confounds the speculation.

The Andalucia region is perfect for Dorne!!! It was one of my favorite places when I went to Spain, particularly Sevilla and Cordoba. Such a beautiful place and the architecture is a wonderful mix of Roman and Moorish influences. The people are very warm and friendly (unlike my experience in Madrid….which felt more like a European New York City). Next time I go I want to go to Barcelona, then through the Basque region and then on to Galicia. ¡Viva España!

    Hoyti Von Totiy,

Pentos was filmed in Malta, not Morocco. I’m sure Dorne is not the only plotline they intend to use Spain for. (Drogon’s lair maybe?)

It’s cool they’d rather film real desert regions than use greenscreens. 4 countries may put pressure on the budget again, but Spain’s hardly the most expensive country to shoot in. Nearly every spaghetti western of the last 50 years was filmed there, not to mention 2 season 7.1 episodes of Doctor Who and the tank chase from Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade.

and Jon may have some SoS material at the beginning of next year.

Yeah, I’m really worried about Jon’s arc pacing next year. He has a helluva lot to do and if they even keep some Storm bits, I really fear a lot will be cut. He and Cersei are the two characters with the most amount of material left in Feast or Dance.

And wasn’t Sergi Lopez in Pan’s Labyrinth? I could be not lazy, but I’m feeling very lazy.

Yeah he was an amazing in it ! I’d love him as a Dornish Lord.

Dornes boring plotline added to the already boring plotlines of Brianne and Arya would mean no season 7 and the cancellation of the show.

    Ionuts,

Yes you are mistaken, In Almeria, Andalucia south of Spain theres a desert with dunes. Is not a large desert but big enought for filming the deserts of Dorne, and you have very close beautiul cities like Granada, Cordoba, SEville, etc that fits very well with Dorne.

    Valyrian Plastic,

I don’t think they’ll film in four countries…one of the reasons they dropped Morocco (I seem to recall from a D&D interview) was that it was just too difficult to have that many countries.

    Mrs. D. Ranged in AZ,

Well we’ll see, and filming in three countries with 2 units to begin with is a pretty daunting task. Using Iceland in the summer made for some beautiful locations (such as the background for Arya’s needlework in 405) but they could’ve skipped it altogether for that season and just used Northern Ireland. It would be ideal to film in Iceland just as the snows are starting to fall, because Winter really has to come for Stannis, Sansa and even Cersei at some point, and not just for making snow castles.

Andalucia IS Dorne, and I’m sure Granada, and more precisely La Alhambra (one of the most beautiful places in Spain, and Earth) will make an excellent Sunspear.

I will try to lurk around the shooting locations! Maybe they need some stunts! :-)

Well, after carefully reviewing the choices for Doran and Arianne, I have come to my choice(s).

Edward James Olmos = Prince Doran

    Inma Cuesto…..AR
    Cote de Pablo…..IA
    Selma Hayek………NN
    Freida Pinto……….E

Oh, since this is a Spain post, the show needs to film a scene at one of those spectacular aqueducts.

Without a doubt one of these two locations will be Sunspear, of course they will digitally alter some of the detail, I prefer the top one, zahara de la Sierra, but Olvera comes in a close second.

Drogon’s mountain hideaway should be filmed here, Las Medulas, Spain, extremely other worldly mountain formations which the casual HBO viewer will never have seen before, the place is breathtakingly inspiring, I can see a dragon making a next here.

Canary Island Film Commission has a very aggresive 0% tax policy recently. Clash of Titans, Fast&Furious and Exodus have been filmed there. Great variety of volcanoes, desertic landscapes, canyonlands and palm-tree oasis in the eastern islands, and woods and mountains in the western ones. No castles or olive trees, though.

Andalusia is a sure best bet for Dorne, check out el Generalife for the water gardens

I very much doubt that they will use the Alhambra since it is such a famous and iconic palace (and swarming with tourists) but I agree that Andalucia is beautiful and the architecture and climate is perfect for Dorne.

They better not recast Aimee much agreed. I fail to see a reason for them to do that but i saw no reason to recast Tommen either…
At least there is no almost appropriate young blonde Lannister actresses they might like and ‘decide to try in a different role’ like last year!

People need to understand that Tommen from S1/S2 was essentially a featured extra. They always knew they’d have to cast the “real” Tommen once they needed someone who could actually act.

Same thing as with Beric, except moreso if it’s a child actor.

La Alhambra was gorgeous…I wonder if they would let them shoot on the grounds? It would interrupt the tourism there (which is a very big draw) but I’m sure the income for the show would more than compensate for the loss. Wish I could go to Spain this summer and combine a vacation with some fan lurking. :)

Wishing otherwise sadly doesn’t change that, though it would be nice if it did because I have a lot of family strongly for pro-Scottish independence.

    Cash,

That’s not quite correct. Scotland and England are two countries which formally united their monarchs (in 1603) and parliaments (from 1707 to 1998, when a devolved Scottish parliament was created). However, Scotland has its own legal system, laws, economic policies, international sports teams and devolved government which set it apart from the rest of the UK. So does Northern Ireland, for that part. Both Northern Ireland and Scotland maintain distinct border (though not border controls) with the rest of the UK, for example.

They are certainly separate countries to one another, even if for simplicity most international institutions classify the “UK” as one country. It’s really not that simple.

I do like the Riverlands comparison, however, as the status of the Riverlands as one of the Seven Kingdoms or not has been argued about almost as fiercely :)

They are different countries. Each have their own parliaments and powers, legal codes, culture, etc. The UK is a sovereign state made up of different parts – namely the countries of England and Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland. It is not analogous to, say, the USA and its States. In September this year I’ll be voting to return sovereignty to Scotland.

Was it only the pilot for Game of Thones which was filmed in Scotland? For me personally it’s so sad that they didn’t continue filming later episodes in my country as we, like Northern Ireland, have some truly amazing landscapes and a real diversity of different backdrops. Would have been amazing if they had filmed my favourite show in my own country. Although I can grudgingly admit that Northern Ireland has done a great job of being Westeros!

The debate on whether Scotland is a country or not depends on ones definition of “country”. Certainly Scotland have their own culture and Parliament but, then, so do Gujarat, Texas and Tasmania. And they are states not countries. They, like Scotland, are not responsible for their own “defence” or foreign relations. They are not members of the United Nations and have no international recognition as countries. Hell, breakaway regions of Georgia like Abkhazia and South Ossetia have more international recognition as countries than Scotland.

By my definition Scotland is a nation, and not a country. Should their independence referendum succeed then they will become a country. Until then the United Kingdom is the country and Scotland one of the nations that make it up.

The British have strange systems of defining the status of places. For instance the “town” of Reading in Berkshire has a population of about 200,000 whilst the “city” of St Davids in Wales has a population of a little over 1,000. I’d suggest that Scots or Britons maintaining that “Scotland is a country because that’s what it’s called” are simply, shall we say, differently informed than us in the rest of the world.

    My $.02.

    Rhys,

You are saying that “South Ossetia” has more international standing than ENGLAND!!!! It is not just Scotland that is a country, England also, they have their own flags, borders, languages, and National Sports Teams…

There is no such thing as a Great British football (soccer) team, cricket team or rugby team, it is ENGLAND who competes as a COUNTRY in the World Cup. Great Britain is the geographical title of the Island of England, Scotland and Wales. And the United Kingdom represents the Crown Union of 4 separate COUNTRIES.

The referendum is not to make Scotland a country which it already is but to break from the Union. I’m sorry to argue but you are simply wrong and uneducated about our history which is fine but please don’t tell an Englishman in real life that his country is less significant than “South Ossetia”
