Game of Thrones’ New Red Priestess Cast, Plus Meereenese Plot Spoilers!

Yesterday, we wondered who the “lady in red” was, seen in Game of Thrones photos from filming in Peñiscola. Today that question has been answered. The casting news fan site Watchers On The Wall yesterday noted that actress Melanie Liburd had started posting to her Instagram that she was heading to Spain to start filming Game of Thrones.

Meanwhile, Los Siete Reinos has posted pictures that give a good close up of yesterday’s “Lady in Red” (ie: Red Priestess) who was seen from high atop the the walls of Meereeen. In this scene, she down in the streets, among the people.

Looks like the same actress to me. And from the leaked audition details a few months back, we can guess she’s here in Meereen to help preach the Word of Daenerys to the Masters and the former slaves of the City.

As you may recall, Varys has a hatred of magic and Red Priests due to the traumatic incident in his childhood that left him eunuch-ized. Tyrion’s decision to align himself with one, even as a solid marriage of church and city politics as part of their stated cause to rehabilitate the the image of the Mother of Dragons in the city she abandoned, has to be very difficult for him. Perhaps then, it’s not surprising that L7R reports there was a scene filmed in the Plaza de Santa Maria where a dock was greenscreened behind the two actors, as Varys took his leave of Meereen and Tyrion. Reports suggest that the dialogue overheard has the two of them leaving on good terms. Here the two actors are in the Plaza:

With Varys out of the picture, it looks as if Tyrion will be relying on Missandei for advice. The two of them were seen entering Artillery Park to film a scene together.

ABC.es has a gallery of photos from yesterday’s filming. Many of them are tourists getting a chance to see Meereen up close, as well as the areas we’ve seen before. But this picture of David Benioff relaxing between takes might just be my favorite.

More plot spoilers for the days ahead include a big scene Monday which will reportedly include “starving Meereenese.” So it seems that those who theorized that the siege of Meereen is on for this season may in fact be correct.

But where is Daenerys, as her people are starving?

Well despite continuing rumors that she is in Peñiscola to film, Emilia Clarke continues to be having fun on what are clearly her days off. And she’s even hanging out with popular long haired deceased cast members at Paris Fashion Week.

We meant Jason Momoa, sillies, not Jon Snow. (Harington’s in Ireland, haven’t you heard?)

UPDATE: Deadline has confirmed that Melanie Liburd is indeed playing a Red Priestess on Game of Thrones Season 6, probably one who helps Varys and Tyrion keep control over Meereen.
