A rumor involving the new and exciting world of streaming services touches on Game of Thrones. According to App Advice, Apple is working on a streaming service for Apple TV, and is thinking of acquiring Time-Warner to get ahold of its content. In the words of Fortune:
"Apple has been trying for years to assemble a “skinny bundle” of the most highly desired channels—or “apps,” as Tim Cook prefers to call them. The idea is that if the programming is good enough, if the price is right, and if the package includes live sports, cable TV subscribers will cut the cord and leave the world of 500-channel TV for Apple’s streaming service."
Time-Warner owns, among other things, HBO, which means that this deal would give Apple control over shows like Game of Thrones. This could be huge for cord-cutters who are looking to still stay up to date on hit shows. Apple’s long-rumored streaming service has been on hold for a while, but gaining access to Time-Warner could change everything. It would give Apple more content than it knew what to do with (Time-Warner also ownsTurner Broadcasting System, Inc. and Warner Bros.).
There are other companies Apple could acquire to expand their streaming footprint. App Advice mentions giants like Disney and Netflix. Apple and Disney have worked together in the past (Pixar), and adding Netflix to Apple TV would be a game-changer that might squash competition from the likes of Amazon Prime and Hulu.
If there is a deal developing between Apple and Time-Warner, it would behoove Apple to move quickly, so it could take advantage of the sure-to-be-popular Game of Thrones Season 6. Cord-cutters, rejoice…you may be paying a lot less and getting a lot more for you dollar in the very near future.
