Iwan Rheon: We’ll see new sides to Ramsay Bolton in Season 6
By Dan Selcke
Love him or hate him, Ramsay Bolton has done a fine job of filling the villain void since Joffrey Baratheon died in Season 4. Going into Season 6, he’s definitely public enemy number #1, so long as you don’t count the White Walkers, and according to actor Iwan Rheon, the character is going to deepen in the coming year. “I get to do loads of different things and show sides to Ramsay that you haven’t seen before,” Rheon told Entertainment Weekly in a new interview. “This season fills him out a bit.”
To start, we’ll see him be chagrined after daddy Roose Bolton finds out he let Sansa Stark escape her cruel imprisonment/marriage.
"He’s sheepish. His father is obviously not pleased. Without Sansa, he doesn’t have a much power as having a Stark and an heir. Without her, he is not what he was. He’s still sort of a bastard, really, even though he’s been legitimized by another bastard – as Sansa rightly pointed out. And we start by finding out how Ramsay really felt about Myranda …"
Considering he’s a sociopath, I’d expect Ramsay not to care too much about what happened to Myranda, but he could surprise us. After all, according to Rheon, Season 6 will subvert people’s expectations about the character.
"There is stuff that’s pretty bleak. The writing is so clever, you get to play against what you usually do. The audience knows about Ramsay now, so you don’t need to always be doing evil stuff. You can be really nice and that makes it more sinister – and that’s the fun thing to do with Ramsay. We’re trying to play against what you know."
I suppose that, after three seasons of playing an unapologetic fiend, it’s time Ramsay got some shading. It’s way too late to give him a Jaime-like redemption arc, but if the show gives some texture to what I very much hope will be his downfall, I’ll be pleased. “You’ll see him change a bit, and take his responsibilities more seriously,” Rheon said. Bring it on.
