I know sometimes it feels like nobody likes Dorne. But there are some who do! The show, for instance! At least, we think they do. After the way everything went down in the premiere, maybe less so? Either way, the producers certainly had fun killing off anyone of use in that classic Westerosi fashion.

Giving new meaning to “duckface.”

The Making Game of Thrones blog loves to give us glimpses of the storyboard art created for every scene by artist Will Simpson. In the past, they’ve shown us moments like Dany taking off on Dragonback, and fight scenes like Brienne fighting Littlefinger’s men. For the Game of Thrones season 6 premiere, the storyboards show a part of the massacre of Dornish characters that occurred halfway through the episode, specifically Trystane being taken down by the Sandsnakes. (Who coincidentally seem to have used Littlefinger’s transporter to get onto the ship with him in the first place.)

What I find fascinating about this set is that, unlike some other storyboards where they really are little cartoons of exactly what we saw on screen, in this case, all of the images are flipped. Trystane’s camera shots were looking up at him from the right side, whereas in these picture the camera looks straight from the left. The shot of Nymeria was also reversed.

Here is our “duckface” shot that I keep joking about. Note that Simpson’s original concept image did not have the spear coming out of the center of his face, but on more of a diagonal, and also slightly downwards instead of up. (That’s actually not possible, since the actress who plays Obara is shorter than Trystane, so her spear would always go up slightly.)

Also, the shot isn’t directly in the back of the head—it’s again to the side, so we could see Obara stabbing him, instead of having the “surprise reveal” after he falls down.

Nymeria looks ticked either way, though. You have to admit: Obara may have made quick work of things, but it should have been Nymeria’s kill. If they’re keeping score (like Gimli and Legolas used to do in Lord of the Rings, and you know they are!) Nymeria has every right to be annoyed. Greedy bitch indeed.
