Ratings for Game of Thrones rise again with “The Door”

The ratings news keeps getting better for Game of Thrones. At this time last year, the ratings were slipping a bit—the Season 5 premiere set a record with 8 million live viewers, but by Episode 5, “Kill the Boy,” they were hovering in the 6-7 million range. Not so this year. After the Season 6 premiere pulled in 7.94 viewers, live viewership has remained very consistent, and actually went up for “Book of the Stranger,” the season’s fourth episode. That trend continues with “The Door,” which nabbed 7.89 million live viewers. That’s the fourth highest-rated episode in the show’s history, behind only “Mother’s Mercy,” “The Wars to Come,” and “The Red Woman.”

“Our ratings are enormous!”

Game of Thrones closest competition on Sunday was Fear the Walking Dead, which pulled in 4.39 million live viewers. Traditionally, ratings tick upwards towards the end of a year. Can we expect that Game of Thrones will once again break its own ratings record for a single episode? The way things are going, it’s certainly possible.

It’s also looking more and more certain that, once all is said and done, Season 6 will top Season 5 for overall viewership. Game of Thrones has managed to do that year after year, which is pretty remarkable for a show that’s been around this long. People seem to be appreciating the momentum this season has behind it.
