See Davos’ Surprising Discovery (Video)

This time last year, Melisandre burned Shireen Baratheon at the stake. In Episode 9, Season 5, “The Dance of Dragons,” Stannis decided to listen to the “Red Witch,” as Davos has always called her, and sacrifice his daughter. Ad for what? So he could ride against Ramsay and Winterfell to his own doom.

So far this season, Davos has been in the dark about that, as he and Melisandre have formed a shaky alliance over their new chosen leader, Jon Snow. Davos even gave Melisandre the pep talk she needed to bring Jon back to life. But now, with Davos and Jon’s forces stationed in that same spot where Stannis was during his ill-fated march on Winterfell, will the truth come out?

I was a heavy heart to carry
My feet dragged across the ground
And he took me to the spoilers
Where he slowly let me drown

That’s a lot of spoilers we’re facing.

Liam Cunningham, who plays Davos, said that it would be bad storytelling if his character never found out about Shireen, and we all forgot about it. Despite his semi-truce with Melisandre, and their semi-bonding following Jon’s resurrection, there are years of hate and mistrust between the two of them. And Davos loved Shireen like she was his own little girl. It was simply unfathomable, after it was mentioned in passing that the Stark forces were setting up camp in literally the same spot where Stannis did last year, that Davos would not find the funeral pyre where Shireen screamed her life away. After all, Brienne can’t always be there to accidentally interrupt his questions.

The question was what would he do about it when he did.

And it looks like we might not find out tonight, as the show merely left it at that, and then the battle began.
