Kit Harington, Peter Dinklage lose Best Supporting Actor Emmy to Ben Mendelsohn
By Dan Selcke
Game of Thrones is nominated for a whole heap of awards at tonight’s Emmys, and it’s already picked up a couple, including wins for Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Directing, both for “Battle of the Bastards.” Yeah, we can see it.
But how about Kit Harington, the man at the center of the battle? Unfortunately, he wasn’t as lucky in his category. Both he and castmate Peter Dinklage (Tyrion) were nominated for the Outstanding Support Actor award. Harington was favored to win the award, but he and Dinklage lost to Ben Mendelsohn, of Netflix’s Bloodline.
The women of Game of Thrones didn’t fare any better. Lena Headey (Cersei), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys), and Maisie Williams (Arya) were all up for the Outstanding Supporting Actress category, but they lost to Maggie Smith, who was honored for her work on the final season of Downton Abbey.
To date, Dinklage is the only actor on the show to get an Emmy, although it’s rolling in awards for Directing, Writing, and technical credits, plus one (so far) award for Best Drama. Will the likes of Harington and Headey ever have their day? The show isn’t eligible for the 2017 Emmys, but check back in 2018 and 2019, the final year Game of Thrones will be in contention.
