The Mystery Knight graphic novel gets a release date

The Song of Ice and Fire novels get all the press, but devoted fans know that George R.R. Martin has also written a series of three novellas set in Westeros about 90 years before the events of the series. Called The Tales of Dunk and Egg, the novellas tell the story of Ser Duncan the Tall, future Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, and his squire, Aegon V Targaryen, known as Egg. (He later ruled Westeros as Aegon the Unlikely. He’s the brother Maester Aemon mentions a couple of times on Game of Thrones.)

The first two novellas in the series—The Hedge Knight and The Sworn Sword—were adapted as graphic novels in 2005 and 2008 respectively. In 2013, George R.R. Martin announced that the third story—The Mystery Knight— would get the graphic novel treatment as well, although there’s been no news since. Now, Westeros.org reports that both Amazon and Random House have listed the release date for the adaptation of as July 4, 2017.

All three of the Dunk and Egg stories were collected in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which includes illustrations.

Amazon isn’t entirely reliable when it comes to release dates, but Random House is more trustworthy. Also, both outlets claim that the graphic novel will be 240 pages (which seems excessive, but possible) and that the illustrator is Mike S. Miller, who illustrated the first two adaptations. Martin also named Miller in his 2013 announcement.

We’ll keep a look out for official confirmation. If the book does come out in July of next year, it’ll roughly coincide with the debut of Game of Thrones Season 7. Also, it will have been nine years since the last Dunk and Egg graphic novel, meaning that fans have been waiting longer for this than for The Winds of Winter.
