Season 7 filming: Pics show messy aftermath of major battle scene shooting in Spain
By Dan Selcke
The Game of Thrones production is winding down a massive weeks-long shoot at El Barrueco de Arriba in Spain, where it’s been shooting a major battle scene for Season 7. Hoy has posted some evocative pics of the carnage, but be warned: they contain SPOILERS. More below.
If you’re just hopping on the spoiler train, here’s the story: the production is filming a huge brawl between the Lannister army, led by Jaime, and Daenerys’ Dothraki horde. (And possibly the Unsullied.) Dany’s army will ambush Jaime’s after the Lannisters raid nearby Highgarden, meaning this battle takes place in the Reach. They’re on their way back to King’s Landing with their loot, when BAM: wrath of the dragon queen. (Head here for more details.)
Daenerys herself, riding Drogon, will also make an appearance. I’m guessing that’s where a lot of this smoke comes from:
They are really doubling down on the fog. This fight looks like it’s going to be visually spectacular.
Below, you can get a panoramic view of the set from across a waterhole, a prominent feature of El Barrueco de Arriba.
And here’re the ruined Lannister caravans after the Dothraki or Drogon or whoever else gets to them.
Head to Hoy for even pics.
Filming at El Barrueco de Arriba is scheduled to continue through December 10, so there may yet be more carnage to come. After that, the show will film material in the Old Town district of Cáceres, which is expected to stand in for King’s Landing, on December 14 and 15. El Periódico Extremadura has some shots of the preparations being made.
The outlet also reports that Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) is in the area. The principal actors involved in the battle shoot at Los Barruecos—Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime), Jerome Flynn (Bronn), and James Faulkner (Randyll Tarly)—have been staying in Cáceres for the duration. It’s unclear whether Dinklage will be filming at Los Barruecos, in Cáceres, or both. People have been claiming to have seen Emilia Clarke (Daenerys) in the city, as well, although there’s no confirmation.
Finally, Los Siete Reinos may have cracked a Season 7 casting puzzle. A while back, we reported that actor Rory Dignam had been cast on the show, but we didn’t know who he was playing.

Relatedly, back when the production was shooting on Itzurun Beach in Zumaia, we saw it filming a scene where Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) appeared to be getting beaten by his own men. LSR zoomed in on one of those pics, and saw what it thinks is Dignam among the Ironborn soldiers. That’s purportedly him without the helmet in the below shot:
Also, Dignam uploaded photos from local sights on his Facebook page around the time this scene was shot. It’s not conclusive, but this all points to Dignam playing a member of the Ironborn. We’re still not sure why they’re beating on Theon, though.
