Update: THREE Game of Thrones cast members return to Croatia to film Season 7

A couple of weeks ago, Embassy Films put up a casting call for extras. They were going to film scenes in Dubrovnik, Croatia in mid-December. The notice didn’t say what show or movie it was for, but given that Embassy had worked on Game of Thrones in the past, we wondered if there was a connection.

The Game of Thrones production has used Dubrovnik to stand in for King’s Landing for years—iconic scenes like the riot in Season 2 and Cersei’s Walk of Shame were filmed there. However, it eased off after Season 5. In Season 6, Girona mostly stood in for the city. And even now the production is preparing to shoot King’s Landing scenes in the Spanish city of Cáceres for Season 7.

However, it returned to Dubrovnik for one Season 6 scene: the moment in “The Red Woman” when Cersei (Lena Headey) stood on the shore and waited for Myrcella’s return.

Gregor “the Mountain” Clegane (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) was also a part of that scene. Now, it looks like the same two actors are returning to the city, courtesy of a tweet from Headey:

Note the name on the airline safety packet: Croatia Airlines. Also note Headey’s socks, because they are intense. And of course, note the size difference between the two actors, which is the actual point of the photograph.

So the Mountain and the Mad Queen are off to Croatia. In Season 6, the production went back to Dubrovnik to film Myrcella’s return to King’s Landing, at the same harbor where it filmed her departure back in Season 2. Why is it returning this time? Does it again have something specific in mind?

There’s also this question: if the production is filming King’s Landing scenes in Cáceres tomorrow and Thursday, and Headey and Björnsson are in Croatia, will Cersei and the Mountain not be part of the Cáceres shoot? It’s possible—there are other characters in King’s Landing, after all. It’s also possible that Headey took these pictures earlier and is just posting them now.

UPDATE: The plot thickens, as Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) has also posted photos to his Instagram account daring people to guess where he is.

The wide consensus among commenters is that he’s at the Christmas market in Zagreb, Croatia. This suggests that Jaime will appear alongside Cersei and the Mountain in whatever scenes the production is filming in the country, although the fact that he’s in Zagreb rather than Dubrovnik is interesting. That also raises further questions about just what will be filmed in Cáceres. More as it breaks.
