SPOILERS: Unexpected actor returning for Game of Thrones Season 7

Six seasons in, Game of Thrones has a very deep roster of characters. And even though plenty died in Season 6, we got new ones, too, including Lyanna Mormont (Bella Ramsey) and Robett Glover (Tim McInnerny), both of whom are returning for Season 7.

Today, Watchers on the Wall brings the world news of another, more surprising return. Beware SPOILERS below.

According to his United Artists agency résumé, David Bradley will appear in Game of Thrones Season 7. Bradley, you will recall, played the acerbic Walder Frey in Seasons 1, 3 and 6 of the show.

The Winds of Winter

Now, the last time we saw Walder Frey, Arya Stark had just slit his throat after feeding him a pie made with meat from his own sons. So how does he come back? Well, we remind you that Arya is lately of the Faceless Men, who have the power to change their faces. So while David Bradley may appear in Season 7, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Walder Frey will. Instead, Arya might impersonate him.

That explanation lines up with some Reddit spoilers that leaked a while back. Alternatively, Walder Frey could always appear in one of Bran’s dives into the past. Or he might just have an open casket funeral. We’ll have to wait until the summer to find out for sure.

        • There could be something in this. In the books, Jamie Lannister orders the Freys to deliver all of the RW prisoners to the crown. He then increases the number of guards escorting Edmure on his journey to exile at Casterly Rock, just in case the BwB attempt a rescue.

          In the TV show, things have developed differently.

          (Speculation tin foil hat firmly on) IF Arya were to impersonate Walder Frey and engineer the release of Edmure Tully and the other Red Wedding hostages, this would be a neat way of closing this change from the books. I’m working on the presumption that Arya wants to give Edmure the chance to restore house Tully in the Riverlands and challenge the Lannisters.

          • Edmure lost me last season. Spineless cretin. Edmure is useless, I even prefer Jaime over him

  • Arya wearing a Walder Frey mask is just a bit too much for me. She’s not a faceless man, after all, or for that matter, a man at all.

    They need his body too. In any case, based on a leak I doubted, I’ve been hoping for news of Bradley’s re-appearance. As an inside scene surely D&D could have kept it hidden, so the surprise is that Bradley’s CV is the revelation source. Of course, maybe they asked David Bradley to troll the fandom ;-}

    Oh, but she is a Faceless Man…and Arya. I’ve been hoping Arya would get the full Faceless Man powers as revealed in the books. According to the Wiki of Ice and Fire :
    ” Faceless Men are occasionally women.[2] Only rarely would they train a child. They are trained to use all their senses to root out deception and create their disguises, seemingly possessing magical abilities that allow them to change their appearance at will. Part of their training includes discarding their true identity in a nihilistic way, thinking of themselves as “no one”.
    Back in Season 2 , when Jaquen H’ghar gave Arya the Valar Morghulis coin and said he could help her erase many names from her List, he must have realised that she would always be a rogue operator by FM standards, but he invited her anyway. In S6E8 when he said, “Finally, a Girl is No One.”, it probably meant that by trapping and killing a trained Faceless Man (the Waif) Arya had passed the test with a First Honours and could now assume the powers.
    One question I have is why she’s still at the Twins after killing Walder and the two sons who were the main perpetrators of the Red Wedding. Perhaps she stayed on to free Edmure, or maybe she heard that the Freys were now preparing to attack Jon and Stark-controlled Winterfell, or some other new impetus to kill the lot of them. But if she does indeed spare women and children, then her Stark honour about protecting the innocent is as strong as ever.

  • Im guessing Arya gathers the rest of the present Frey clan together,IN DISGUISE AS WALDER FREY, CHEERS AND poisons them all. See Don Ellladio
