Sophie Turner’s 21st birthday is on February 21st, and the folks behind fansite SophieTurner.org decided to honor the actress who has brought Sansa Stark to life on Game of Thrones for the past six seasons. But rather than buy Turner a present, fan Victoria Finley set up a GoFundMe campaign benefiting one of Turner’s favorite charities: the International Rescue Committee (IRC), a humanitarian relief organization dedicated to helping refugees worldwide.
Turner, along with other cast members like Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), have long supported the IRC. Using the hashtag #realmtotherescue, HBO previously offered fans the chance to win a trip to the season 6 premiere in return for donations. (Headey in particular has been very vocal on the plight of Syrian refugees.) We have no inside knowledge, but something tells us Turner would be happy for fans to donate to the IRC in her name.
As Finley notes on the campaign page, donations are open past Turner’s birthday, until March 5th, and all funds collected will be donated to the IRC “in both Sophie’s and her fans names.” One thousand dollars is the initial goal of the fund, but it could very well raise more. And if you were wondering what you were going to get Turner for her birthday, here’s an easy idea for you. Way better than a gift card.
Either way, we wish Sophie Turner a very happy name day.
