Video: Game of Thrones Adaptation Mod will turn the world of Skyrim into Westeros

Before Bethesda made Skyrim, its massively popular open world videogame, they talked with “George R.R. Martin’s people” about adapting Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire book series as a game. This was years before Game of Thrones debuted on HBO, and Bethesda decided to go their own way, but executive director Todd Howard said that “[p]eople in our studio liked [A Game of Thrones], and it seeped in a bit to what we were doing.”

Fans have taken note of the similarities before. For example, last year someone recreated the trailer for Game of Thrones’ first season using assets from 260 different Skyrim mods.

But this…this is something else entirely. Kotaku reports that a fan named Kualan is making an elaborate Skyrim mod that will switch out the world of the game for Westeros. According to Kualan’s writeup on Mod DB, the Game of Thrones Adaptation Mod “will involve changing everything from the soldiers you encounter (goodbye Imperials, hello Lannisters), the places you visit (Windhelm? I think you mean Winterfell) and conversion of several tens of thousands of text and subtitles to adapt the story and lore to a more Westeros-friendly environment.”

"In addition to meeting hundreds of characters from ASOIAF and GoT lore, you’ll also be able to recruit over 50 unique NPC followers to accompany you as you fight your way across the Seven Kingdoms. From Tyrion Lannister and Sandor Clegane to Arya Stark and Brienne of Tarth, you can take your adventure across Westeros with any of your favorite characters."

It’ll include original areas, too — Dragonstone, Bear Island, Robb Stark’s war camp and more will all make appearances. You can watch the trailer for the mod below:

At the moment, there’s no release date set. (Kualan admits that, “[l]ike George R.R. Martin himself,” he’s not great with deadlines. But it’s been in beta testing since November. If you’re interested in pushing development along, Kualon has a Patreon account. And if you’d rather not wait, you can always play the excellent Game of Thrones adventure game series from Telltale.
