Mourn your favorite character in this interactive Game of Thrones cemetery

Although a little over six years have passed since the first season of Game of Thrones debuted, many of us are still in mourning over such beloved characters as Catelyn Stark, Hodor and Oberyn Martell. To help with the grieving process, New York Magazine web developer Chris Kirk created an interactive graveyard to honor the fallen. Visitors can leave digital flowers on the graves of their favorite characters, which is a touching way to remember them and a fun way to see which dead characters are the most popular.

"If you watch Game of Thrones, chances are you’ve watched the show kill off a character who mattered to you: a lord, a sellsword, a queen, a knight; someone you loved, or someone you loved to hate. It’s so hard to say goodbye, even when the deceased are fictional. That’s why we’re opening the Game of Thrones Graveyard, where the show’s most well-known characters rest for eternity."

The graveyard features some great artistic touches, such as fresh earth on the graves of the characters who died in the most recent episode like Tommen and Margaery, and a zombie-like hand reaching from the graves of Jon Snow and Sandor Clegane. Thankfully, neither character is actually a zombie. The only prospect more frightening than facing off against the Hound is facing off against the Hound as a wight.

As the graveyard also lists the episode where each character died, a quick look provides us with an easily digestible death count per season, as well as proof that the ladies of Westeros tend to fare better than the men. Of the 102 listed deaths featured in the graveyard, only 22 (one of which is Sansa’s direwolf, Lady) are female, with seasons 5 and 6 proving the most dangerous to the women. Interestingly, we lost five named female characters in season 5, and six in season 6. Let’s hope that season 7 doesn’t follow the same pattern.

Looking at the graves of the deceased, it’s no surprise to see that Ned Stark is the most popular corpse in Westeros, with 326,579 flowers to his name. He’s followed closely by his eldest son, Robb (255,320), Oberyn Martell (237,011), Khal Drogo (201,127) and Catelyn Stark (200,674). Rounding out the top ten are Lady, Grey Wind, Ygritte, the recently-resurrected Jon Snow and Talisa Stark. Shireeen Baratheon just missed out on a spot in the top ten, but is the only other character on the list who has received over 100,000 flowers.

Surprisingly, Stannis Baratheon, a favorite with a large subset of the Thrones fandom, has been visited by a mere 35,611 mourners. That’s fewer than either of Stannis’ brothers, Pyp and Grenn, and even Viserys Targaryen. True, mourners have had a lot more time to visit Viserys’ grave, but still, that’s a cold reception for the last Baratheon.

But then again, Stannis strikes us as a man who would have considered graveside flowers wasteful, so maybe that works out. Still, there’s still a lesson here about burning children at the stake: don’t do it.
