All Pixels Must Die: Relive the deaths of Game of Thrones in 8-bit form

Remaking scenes from Game of Thrones using old school video game graphics is something that’s been done before, but I can’t recall it ever being quite so grimly effective. The folks over at the pipocaVFX YouTube channel have recreated some of the more memorable deaths on the show—from Viserys Targaryen’s death by molten gold shower in Season 1 all the way up to the assassination of Jon Snow from just under a month ago—using crude, pixelated, but strangely fascinating 8-bit imagery. Have a watch, unless you’re in a good mood and don’t want to lose it.

I’m not what exactly about this video gets under my skin. Maybe it’s the fact that the 8-bit figures have no faces, or maybe it’s the tinny, elemental nature of their death cries. In any case, kudos to director and editor Filipe Costa and his team for putting together an effective little short film. This video also proves that, whether it’s live-action or pixelated, it’s going to take me a while to completely get over Shireen’s death by fire.
