Grammy/Emmy winning producer and director Todd McFarlane—creator of Spawn—is the creative force behind McFarlane Toys, one of America’s top action figure manufacturers. McFarlane Toys has been responsible for some of the most popular collectible figures to hit online stores and comic book shops for nearly 20 years. Now, the company is stepping into Westeros with its first ever Game of Thrones-inspired Construction Set Toyline.
From the official McFarlane Toys press release:
"In 2014, Todd McFarlane’s award-winning toy company, McFarlane Toys, revolutionized the construction brick aisle with its introduction of realistic and highly detailed construction sets. McFarlane Toys will add an artistic layer to each Game of Thrones brick piece, turning ordinary construction sets into realistic models of notable locations seen on the show. The new Game of Thrones construction sets extend McFarlane’s high standards of artistic vision, realistic accuracy, and incredible detail the company is known for throughout the industry."
MacFarlane was pleased with the deal. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to create high-quality collectible construction sets based on this fan-favorite property,” he said. “Both collectors and fans of this epic series can build their favorite scenes with this new product line.”
Fans will get a detailed look at the construction sets, each of which will feature “iconic environments with realistic sculpted pieces,” at next week’s San Diego Comic Con. The Iron Throne Room will be featured in one of the sets, naturally. There’s also a “Mother of Dragons” set, which could refer to any number of things. The sets, plus expansion packs and “figure blind bags,” will hit store shelves in November of this year and range in price from $3.99 to $49.99.
If you’ve ever collected any McFarlane construction sets, then you know how important these blind bags are. I find it very interesting that the prices vary so greatly. Starting at $3.99, you can reasonably expect the lower price points to include extras like a Noble House’s guardsmen, or horses and the like. At the higher price point, at $49.99, you can expect the blind bags to include named characters from Game of Thrones, and possibly iconic props like the Iron Throne.
Here’s more from the press release:
"Construction Sets: MSRP $14.99-49.99 – Depicting the most outstanding moments from your Game of Thrones, including the Iron Throne Room, Mother of Dragons and Attack on the Wall, each set includes scene specific characters, stunning details and realistic accessories."
These are the packs that are most exciting. I can only imagine that the “Attack on the Wall” set will include giants and Thenns…this set would be worth the higher end price if it included Mag the Mighty, the giant king from Season 4, Episode 9, “The Watchers on the Wall.”
"Construction Figure Packs: MSRP $9.99 – Starter packs featuring Houses Stark and Lannister with your favorite house armies, complete with house banner and sigil."
These are the generic sets. They will include generic soldiers bearing House sigils and banners. I will be purchasing House Stark’s sets first…I need more direwolves in my life.
"Construction Set Figures: MSRP $3.99 – Twelve buildable blind bag figures inspired by characters from Game of Thrones. Each 2-inch scale figure includes an environment base, and humans include articulated body parts. Series 1: #1 Tyrion Lannister; #2 Jon Snow ; #3 Daenerys Targaryen; #4 Grey Worm; #5 Ghost; #6 Rhaegal; #7 Unsullied; #8 Crow; #9 Kingsguard; #10 Wildling (w/ Axe); #11 Wildling (w/ Spear) and #12 Wight."
A few things stand out here: apparently there’s a Ghost figure (Jon’s direwolf) and a Rheagal figure (Dany’s green dragon, still locked away in the pit on the show). Also notable is the wight, which will probably be a generic ice-zombie figure. These are the exciting pieces that will add that perfect detail to your specific construction sets. I imagine Jon Snow and Ghost will be a hot ticket item right off the bat.
These McFarlane Toys Construction Sets will become available in time for Christmas and will make the perfect gift for that Game of Thrones fan in your life…in other words, you know exactly what to buy me for Christmas.
