Thousands turn out for Almería casting for Season 6
By Ani Bundel
Two days of casting produced thousand of locals from in and around Almería, hoping to attain a small moment of fame by appearing in the worldwide phenomenon known as Game of Thrones.
One might have thought that the far stricter qualifications that were set down in this casting call might have limited the numbers somewhat. Unlike other casting notices, this one set a much higher height requirement, a request for those with broad chests and warrior-like profiles, and darker skin. But such trivialities didn’t stop the queue from stretching for nearly a mile on both days of the casting call, and many hopefuls still showed up despite not having the ideal look. Check out the video of the queue, via Le Figario, below.
With casting in Almería complete, that covers all four major areas of Spain the show will be filming in this fall. With all four casting calls adding the dates of filming, we now also have a good idea of where Game of Thrones will be in Spain and when. To wit:
- Girona: September 3rd- 18th
- Navarra: September 20th-25th
- Peñíscola: October 1st – 9th
- Almería: October 10th- 23rd
I’m curious what this means for Croatian filming of Braavos and King’s Landing. After all, Lena Headey hasn’t given birth yet, and one assumes she’ll be taking at least a couple weeks of maternity leave after she does, so the show might be holding off doing her scenes until the end of October. Last year, the show spent all of September filming in Croatia (first Braavos, then King’s Landing back-to-back) before packing up and moving wholesale to film in Spain in October. They might have chosen to do that because it was their first year in Spain, and the producers felt it would be good to give working there their full attention. This year, if they’re not planning on holding off for Headey, they might be planning to film in all three locations simultaneously, given that the Spanish dates cover nearly a full two-month span. (Ireland always films concurrently with the more southern climates—that’s just a given.)
We’ll find out once we learn when the production plans to arrive in Dubrovnik.
