David Bradley will return as Walder Frey…at some point
Well, well, well. Amidst all the exciting casting news and returning faces as Game of Thrones filming for Season 6 commences, Walder Frey has poked his head out of the smelly ground, looking for more Starks to kill.
Or something like that. While promoting his FX horror series The Strain at the 2015 summer TV press tour, David Bradley confirmed to Zap2It that there are “plans” for his character’s return, though he isn’t specific about when. “I can’t really say because things are in a delicate situation,” he says, fiddling with a small Lannister-sealed note behind his back. He seems pretty excited about coming back, too: “I love playing someone irredeemable… he’s so appalling that there’s a kind of dark humor in there somewhere.” (He was more perfect for the role of Argus Filch than anyone could have dreamed.)
Despite the lack of specifics, could this pre-emptive talk of Walder Frey’s return signal a possible revival of Lady Stoneheart hopes? After all, the Frey family does factor into the character’s introduction via the ill-fated Merrett Frey, and the visual effects team have already mentioned a certain scene that was slated for Season 4 that fell onto the back-burner twice.
Of course, Frey could also return in a more practical manner: he is in a central position at the Twins, so there may be some political maneuvering that the show’s producers would rather not have to do off-screen or through dialogue. Whatever the case, David Bradley is a phenomenal presence; I’m sure we’ll be hating his on-screen guts all over again when he does finally return to the show.
