The last we saw of Arya Stark, she had been struck blind by the man who wears the face of Jaqen H’ghar, but is really the mysterious “no one.” Whereas most of the plotlines from Season 5 resolved themselves by the finale (mostly because the characters involved died), we left Arya on a cliffhanger. Was she really blind? What was happening? How long would she remain blind?
Maisie Williams, who plays Arya. admitted she was apprehensive about this in an interview. Apparently those contacts covered her entire eyeball, they hurt like hell to wear, and did mostly render her blind in real life. She feared they might have to wear them throughout Season 6, or even beyond.
And now it looks like her fears are coming true. From her Instagram yesterday, she posted pictures and a video of herself wearing eye masks, desperately trying to recover from what we’ll assume is the strain of filming scenes for Season 6.
Ouch, that looks painful.
Both eyes look bruised to the point of black eyes, leading Maisie to joke that it was merely the abuse of her older onscreen sister Sansa, played by Sophie Turner. “Explain dat!” she writes to Sophie’s account.
Sophie doesn’t respond, but she does have her own pics of hanging with Maisie on her account, which make it seem that it’s likely the contacts that are to blame for the bruising, rather than Sophie.
Poor Maisie. Let’s hope for her sake the blindness doesn’t last all season long. She’s got more killing to do!
