Kristian Nairn (Hodor) is Glad Jon Snow Died

Out of all the deaths in the Season 5 finale, none was quite so shocking or heart wrenching (depending on whether or not you knew it was coming) than the death of Jon Snow. Even with the show telegraphing the anger and disapproval of the Night’s Watch through Olly, it was still a moment I think everyone would rather not have lived through.

Everyone, that is, but Kristian Nairn. The man famous for playing the beloved monolexic Hodor thought that moment was just great. Speaking to The Express, Nairn expressed a sentiment that, although perhaps not terribly popular, is one I’ve heard before.

“I love Kit and I love his portrayal of Jon Snow but I’m not a huge fan of the character. So I was like: ‘Kill him! Kill him!’,” Kristian confessed.

“He’s boring and there’s so many better characters on Game of Thrones. You’ve killed better characters than that. I didn’t understand all the weeping and wailing, so I say get rid of him. So who knows what’s going to happen though.”

Yes, Nairn thinks that Jon Snow, who always tries to be like his “dad” Ned Stark and do the right thing, is totally dull when compared to more interesting, complex, and evil characters. He’s not the first person I’ve heard say it either. (Though, for the record, the Unsullied person who told me he was glad Jon Snow was dead was the same one who cheered when Robb, Catelyn and the whole Stark crew were taken out at the Red Wedding. There’s no accounting for some people.)

Nairn, for the record, is also Unsullied (hasn’t read the books), which might account for his lack of attachment to Snow. And since he wasn’t in the last season, he admitted that he had no idea it was coming either, until it happened. The part that he found the most affecting was the one he learned about prior to the show airing, due to the controversy in Croatia: Cersei’s Walk.

“I watched the scene with Cersei walk through the city. I just couldn’t believe it. I heard about it. I wasn’t particularly affected by it until I saw it and it starts off being quite mild and it just ramps up and ramps up. By the end of it, it’s just horrifying. You feel so bad for her. How can this get worse? It just keeps getting worse.”

Who knew that the Stark’s faithful servant was Team Lannister? Bran would be so disappointed in him. Perhaps it’s a good thing Hodor can’t say anything other than his name.

Speaking of Bran, Nairn was of course asked what was in store for their little party north of the Wall in Season 6. He dropped a hint, but wouldn’t say anything outright.

“I think we’ve got some pretty cool stuff ahead of us. I love our storyline. I missed it last season, so I’m excited to see where it’s going to go.”
