Game of Thrones Season 5 Nominated for Only One Golden Globe

Awards season is officially in full swing when the Golden Globes are announced. This morning, at 8am EST, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which bestows this honor, announced the Nominations for the 2015 year. Game of Thrones scored only one nomination, despite receiving the most Emmy wins of any television show ever for Season 5.

Game of Thrones was nominated in the Best Drama category for Television. It is the only repeat nominee from prior years. The other four in the category are all newbies: Outlander, Empire, Narcos, and Mr. Robot. But where those four dramas all have corresponding nominations in the Best Actress and Best Actor categories, Game of Thrones is roundly snubbed, suggesting that the inclusion is more perfunctory than heartfelt, and that its chances of winning are extremely low.

It should be remembered though that Game of Thrones rarely scores nods for individual achievement in acting, since due to the enormous cast, it is very much an ensemble piece. Still, one can always hope that the HFPA would recognize Peter Dinklage, who has been nominated before (and won), or Lena Headey, who gave such a remarkable performance last season, and should have been at least nominated for a Golden Globe. I also would not be surprised if people suggest that the choice to all but ignore the show this year stems from the over abundance of love at the Emmys. The Golden Globes have a tendency to try and show themselves to be “the high-end Emmys” as it were, when it comes to their choices in the television categories, and if a show gets too much Emmy love, that usually means the Globes are less likely to consider it.

Still, as everyone says, it’s an honor just to be nominated. I just wouldn’t expect to see all that many of the cast show up on January 10th, when Ricky Gervais returns to host the show, live on NBC.
