Hilarity pile: amazing expanding castle, “covers” for The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring

Time to scour the internet for stray bits of Game of Thrones-related ephemera. Enter the amazing expanding castle, a la the Game of Thrones opening credits sequence. We have no idea how this is happening, but it’s fantastic.

Last week, fans reacted strongly to George R.R. Martin’s announcement that The Winds of Winter, the long-awaiting sixth installment in his Song of Ice and Fire series, wouldn’t be out ahead of the premiere of Game of Thrones Season 6.

Or won’t it? As fans patiently wait for the new book, we realized that The Winds of Winter was already published in 1980…kind of.

So what do our bored and anxious WiC readers do? Well, dang it, they attempt to adjust reality (or just be cute) with some photoshopped covers.

In this version, the Wall appears in the background and smothers poor author Sandra Field’s credit (our apologies, Sandra). In the version below, a fake George R. R. Martin credit bursts forth, the White Walkers show up (let’s face it—no couple is allowed to be this happy in Westeros), and the winter snowfall has arrived.

And, lo and behold, we also discovered that Dream of Spring, the current title of the seventh volume in Martin’s series, was published in 1982!

Thanks to the WiC readers who took the time to play with these covers. Could these romance novels actually be the work of George R. R. Martin, writing out of place and time under the pseudonyms of Sandra Field and Lynn Critchley? And while they don’t appear to be fantasy books at first glance, are they, if one reads between the lines, packed with ASOIAF clues and spoilers? I doubt it. But somebody should probably check just to make sure.
