Torchwood’s own tech expert is set to return in the second season of Big Finish’s audio series.
Last Saturday, Big Finish made a few big announcements regarding a number of its audio ranges. Many of which I was pretty excited about, but one announcement that stood out (and one that I was really glad to hear) was the return of Toshiko Sato in the Torchwood audio series, once again played by Naoko Mori.
Series One of the audio series has told stories that mainly focused on one or two members of Torchwood at a time. Series Two looks set to continue that style of narrative, with an episode focusing entirely on Torchwood’s best and much-loved tech expert.
"“Since we started, we’ve been bombarded with people’s wish lists. And obviously poor, doomed Tosh was on them all. So, as we entered Series 2, we decided to get Naoko in – and she was a delight. She really loves that character, and, as she entered the studio, Tosh came back to life – lovely, excitable, brilliant Toshiko Sato.”More from Doctor WhoNcuti Gatwa’s Doctor Who Christmas special is a “complete reinvention”Ncuti Gatwa is “so nervous” to take on Doctor Who roleThe Doctor and Donna are better than ever in “Wild Blue Yonder”Take the Black: House of the Dragon season 2 trailer hints, the Fallout show, and moreJodie Whittaker didn’t pick up on any of the hate for her version of the Doctor"
Toshiko Sato was always one of my favourite characters of the program. Tech-savvy, but clearly more than a little shy, she was the kind of character whom I think a lot of Torchwood’s target audience could genuinely relate to (I know that I did). While I was glad to see characters return in the first audio season like Jack, Ianto, Gwen, and even Yvonne Hartman from the Doctor Who episodes ‘Army of Ghosts’/’Doomsday,’ I was initially disappointed to see that Tosh was not getting an episode of her own.
So I am super glad to hear that Series Two will give us her very own episode, and one that sounds set to be quite the exciting thriller.
"“Toshiko will return to action in the second release of Torchwood Series 2. ‘Torchwood: Zone 10‘ by David Llewellyn will see her dispatched on a secret mission to Russia, to discover the secrets of an intergalactic war that could have horrific consequences for the world – and which will be explored throughout the whole of the second series. The story will also introduce the KVI – the Russian equivalent of Torchwood.”"
I have really been enjoying the audio series of Torchwood so far, even more so than if it had actually returned to television (well, if it had returned to television with the same style and quality as “Miracle Day,” anyway). I was initially worried about each episode focusing only on a certain member or couple at a time, but I have got to admit, it is a style that has really played to Torchwood’s strengths. It has also given each of the main characters their chance to shine on their own.
If ‘Zone 10’ is as great as episodes like ‘Fall to Earth’ and ‘Forgotten Lives,’ and I am sure it will be, then it will be a wonderful return for a brilliant character.
