Ranking the Game of Thrones Trailers: Seasons 1-5

Season 3: The “Bones” Trailer
There were two versions of this trailer released: one was just over one minute long, and then there was an extended trailer. The extended version was somewhat superior, as it gave us glimpses of far more storylines and characters, but there was no getting around that this is probably the least “hype-worthy” trailer for any of the first five seasons.
Unlike earlier trailers, which set the scene and explained what is happening for those not familiar with the show, this one does not bother with an explanation. And although there are those who like MS MR’s “Bones,” I don’t think it’s enough to make up for the disjointedness here. The trailer assumes you know who these characters are and why they are so angry. It’s frustrating to watch a few years down the line, because it feels like, well, an extended trailer for any given episode.
Still, there are classic moments from the series that are shown here for the first time, and classic lines we fans eat up. “The night is dark and full of terrors,” for instance. “I’m going to light the biggest fire the North has ever seen!” Tyrion and Cersei at each others’ throats, and their classic “You’re not half as clever as you think you are/That still makes me more clever than you.” We get our first look at Tormund Giantsbane and the event that gives the episode “The Climb” it’s name, plus our first sighting on the Unsullied. But mostly it feels like a conglomerate of “More of everything you expect! Sex, sword fighting, fire, death!” Exunt pursued by a bear!
At least it ends with dragon flight.
