Game of Thrones production builds the Hardhome set in clip from Season 5 boxset

The Game of Thrones Season 5 home boxset comes out tomorrow, but little bits and pieces from the special features are still leaking out. Female First has a clip from the “A Day in the Life” feature, which goes behind the scenes to show fans how the crew puts the show together. The full “Day in the Life” feature is around 20 minutes long, and this two-and-a-half minute clip gives us a look at the construction of the Hardhome set. Check it out.

“Hardhome” was the one episode from Season 5 that received nearly universal acclaim, so I’d say the production got its money’s worth out of the set. It was built in Magheramorne quarry, an area that has previously hosted sets for Castle Black and King’s Landing (the latter set, which was built especially to film parts of the Battle of the Blackwater, is apparently still there, although in crumbling condition). It’s fun to see some of the planning that went into building it, especially the looks at the concept artwork…

…and the miniature models.

The “Day in the Life” feature will appear on both the DVD and Blu-ray release of the boxset. Both versions will also include:

  • Anatomy of an Episode: Mother’s Mercy—Trace the development of the Season 5 finale from the conception stage through to the editing.
  • The Real History Behind Game of Thrones—George R.R. Martin and historians discuss the real-life inspirations for many of the events on the show.
  • New Characters/New Locations—A look at new characters and locations in Season 5. Duh.
  • Four deleted scenes.
  • 12 audio commentaries.

People who spring for the Blu-ray release will get a few extras, including:

  • The Dance of Dragons—Game of Thrones cast members narrate the story of the Targaryen civil war that tore the realm apart years before the events of the series. This is the one DVD buyers are going to miss most, I think.
  • In-Episode Guide—Look into background information on characters, locations, and events.
  • Histories and Lore—Cast members narrate 14 different videos that explore areas of Game of Thrones mythology, from Robert’s Rebellion to the religion of the Many-Faced God.
