Lena Headey discusses Cersei’s motivations in new interview

At the end of Game of Thrones Season 5, Cersei Lannister had a deeply traumatizing experience: she was forced to walk naked from the Sept of Baelor to the Red Keep. We’ll see soon if that dimmed her fighting spirit, but if the interview below is any indication, her motivations are the same as ever. Good Morning America contributor Jesse Palmer sat down with Lena Headey (Cersei) to discuss the upcoming season of Game of Thrones. For the full interview, tune-in to GMA tomorrow (4/22).
As it was and ever shall be, Cersei wants to sit the Iron Throne. By this point in the series, we have abundant evidence that she’d be terrible at it—she was the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms in all but name in Season 5, and we all saw how that turned out. Still, it seems like nothing so minor as monumental failure is going to take the spring out of her step. “She doesn’t let anything that’s thrown at her keep her down,” Headey said in an interview with Yahoo TV. “She’s such a survivor — she’s making plans. She’s at her scheming best this year.”
So it seems that, if anything, Cersei’s walk of shame has hardened her resolve. With Gregor “Frankenmountain” Clegane by her side, she’s sure to make some serious waves when she gets herself back in the games, although it’s hard to believe they’ll help her sit the Iron Throne. Hopefully we’ll all have fun watching her try. Headey, at least, seem to think we’re in for a treat.
"When we got the scripts this year it was really beyond any of our desire — I can’t say anything but it genuinely is the most ferocious and exciting that it’s ever been."
Game of Thrones Season 6 debuts on April 24. Just three days now.
