Screencap Breakdown: “The Red Woman”

Game of Thrones is not only a fantastic show—it’s a feast for the eyes. From the costumes to the settings to the CGI, every episode has gorgeous moments and amazing acting beats that are well worth freezing in time and considering.
Let’s talk some of the best images from this season’s first episode, “The Red Woman.”

HIS SOUL GOES MARCHING ON
Ben Crompton doing real work here as Dolorous Edd. His reaction to Jon’s death is so touching, especially since the show has focused more on Jon’s friendship with Sam, and sort of skipped over his bond with some of the other Night’s Watchmen.
Note that the staging when Melisandre comes in is literally identical. She’s just as shattered, though for different reasons. None of what she saw in the flames was the truth.
Owen Teale does a great job in this scene. One of the things about Alliser Thorne is that he’s not someone you love to hate. You get where he’s coming from, and why he hates Jon Snow the way he does. You also get why he chose to mutiny. That he owns up to it in public was a surprise at first, but the more I watch this scene, the more it works, and that’s partly because of Teale.
Ramsay loved Myranda, but now’s she’s meat. She was the Kennel Master’s daughter. She will feed the Hounds in the end.
Roose is continually sitting down and eating in front of Ramsay in this amazingly dismissive manner. It’s one of my favorite things about the Bolton father-son relationship.
On a side note, I personally hope the maester is wrong and Walda is not having a boy. Yes, for once I am showing sympathy to a Frey.
Sansa is so miserable and so out of her depth here, you can see her mentally retreating into herself. Her eyes are nearly as pale as her sister’s with the blind contacts in.
This is a great moment—Theon picks up sword and remembers he once knew how to use this. Alfie Allen also did a fantastic job with this scene, shaking off some of Reek’s cowardice.
This is also a great moment: Sansa gains her first follower. If only she had been smart enough to do this last year. Littlefinger has done her a disservice on so many levels.
