Tourism Ireland highlights House Bolton as campaign continues

Last year, Tourism Ireland mounted a series of Game of Thrones-themed stunts that delighted fans and raised the profile of Northern Ireland, where much of the series is filmed. This year, the agency has gotten more ambitious. It’s taken wood from fallen trees along the Dark Hedges—a Northern Irish landmark that stood in for the Kingsroad on the show—and made a series of beautifully engraved doors, each of which will tell the story of a different episode of Game of Thrones Season 6. It’ll then house each door in a pub in Northern Ireland, which will eventually climax in an epic Game of Thrones pub crawl at the end of the season.

The first door was inspired by “The Red Woman,” while the second takes cues from “Home.” Check out a video with up-close shots. The work here is really stunning.

Let’s take a closer look.

The kraken of House Greyjoy. Balon would have dug this—it matches his fireplace.

The Bolton symbol is never going to stop being incredibly creepy. Seeing it carved on actual wood that’s part of an actual door that will hang in an actual pub makes me slightly squeamish. And as the video shows, the dude’s legs are actually raised off the door itself. The whole thing is weirdly, and uncomfortably, lifelike.

And here’s the door how it looks mounted in the Fiddler’s Green Pub in County Down, Northern Ireland.

Tourism Ireland is also producing a number of limited edition Game of Thrones-themed stamps in conjunction with the Royal Mail. They’ll be available in Northern Ireland, although I’m sure Thrones fans the world over would love to get their hands on them. Last week, the stamp spotlighted House Stark. This week, it’s all about the Boltons.

And who knew? The sigil is also creepy on a stamp. If I saw this on a letter I’d be afraid to open it.

We’ll be bringing you info on the GoT Territory campaign each week, as it continues to tell the story of Game of Thrones Season 6.
