Doctor Who: Vintage Dalek Sets Record in Auction

One would have to imagine that a Dalek would rebel at the thought of being bought and sold like a commodity. Still, the legendary foes on Doctor Who would probably have a sense of pride at setting a record in a recent auction.

Purchasing a Dalek would be a risky proposition. On the positive side, if one could keep the Dalek under control, there wouldn’t be much standing between one and their desire to be in possession of an angry pepper pot. On the negative side, it is a Dalek. Extermination is a distinct possibility.

That does not mean, however, that owning a Dalek would be outside of anyone’s dreams. Any fan of Doctor Who would love to get their hands on one, especially a Dalek used as part of the show or a movie. Such a Dalek was exactly what came up for auction, as one used in the 1966 movie Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. — one of three given away by Sugar Puffs as part of a competition — was sold for a record £38,500.

This Dalek isn’t even in mint condition. Originally silver, it was painted red at some point in time during its history. However, that does not diminish the appeal, or the interest in the prop, as the Dalek was also a part of the show Summer Scene in 1992, chasing Rob Brydon at the Ebbw Vale Garden Festival of Wales. There are plenty of fun stories surrounding this Dalek.

Part of a lot of 67 items that were up for sale, the owner of the collection was forced by his wife to sell it, as they were moving to a smaller house. As she stated that she “didn’t want a Dalek in the bedroom,” one can understand why the collection was sold. After all, nothing can ruin the mood, or one’s ability to sleep, quite like a Dalek seeking to exterminate the occupants.
