At the conclusion of every Game of Thrones episode, the production airs and then releases a spate of videos detailing the behind-the-scenes work that went into making it. These videos explore the thought process that went into the creation of particular scenes, and highlight what the writers and directors see as the key moments of the episode.
This week’s “Inside the Episode” videos focus on the scene in Kings Landing where Cersei, for the first time, has to face that she really has lost everything, including her son. Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss also discuss the siege of Riverrun, Jaime and Brienne meeting up again, and Jaime’s choice to allow Brienne to escape once the castle is taken. And of course, they talk about the final scene of the episode: Arya’s fight with the Waif and her decision to never again be “No One.”
In another video, we get Nikolaj Coster-Waldeau’s take on Jaime’s gamble with Edmure, and sending him into Riverrun as the “Tully Trojan Horse.” One might have thought that Tobias Menzies, who plays Edmure, would have also been interviewed. Perhaps he was too busy with his day job over at that other fantasy show on the other premium cable channel.
Our second actor deep dive is from the Meereenese crew, and concerns the surprise return of Daenerys (and Drogon) in the middle of the Masters’ siege on the city. Amusingly enough, the two actors interviewed are Peter Dinklage (of course) and Emilia Clarke. Clarke is a slight surprise, since although she was key to the twist, she didn’t have any lines, merely a look of “What In Heavens Name Did you Do To My City While I Was Gone?!?!” look on her face, like a parent coming home from work to find their teenager throwing a keg party.
The title of the video is also “A Queen Displeased.” That’s not good for Tyrion, is it?
