Doctor Who has won quite a few awards during its illustrious 53 year history. Now, the show is finally eligible for an Emmy due to BBC America being listed as a co-producer.
As a British television institution, Doctor Who has won quite a few awards and made an indelible mark on television history. A show that has spawned numerous imitators over the years, it is more popular than ever, with fans and conventions worldwide.
Since Doctor Who is a program based in the United Kingdom, there are certain awards for which it has yet to be eligible. Despite the popularity of the show stateside, Doctor Who was not eligible to be nominated for an Emmy, as the show would need to be produced by an American entity. Well, that changed last year for Series Nine.

Hidden away in the credits for Series Nine was the notice that the show was now being co-produced by BBC America. It was such a small change, and something that likely would not be noticed, yet has made a dramatic impact upon the show in regards to potential awards. Now, for the first time, Doctor Who is eligible for an Emmy, and has been submitted for consideration for the award.
There are several possible Emmy categories for which Doctor Who is being considered. Peter Capaldi is on the ballot for lead actor in a drama, and Steven Moffat and Rachel Talalay are up for writing and directing respectively for the episode ‘Heaven Sent.’ The show is also a potential candidate for awards involving costumes, visual effects, and its distinctive opening score.
