Did anybody die in “Battle of the Bastards? (Video)

This season, death has been a busy little bee on Game of Thrones. With the sole exception of the ironically named “Blood of My Blood,” every episode has contained multiple deaths, and almost all of them have included at least one passing of a character who has been around Westeros for several seasons.

Even in less bloody seasons, like Season 1, Episode 9 has always been a death-laden hour. Whether it was Ned Stark in Season 1, Davos’ son Matthos Seaworth in Season 2, the majority of the Stark family in Season 3, Ygritte and Grenn in Season 4, or Shireen in Season 5, this is an hour where we can all bet that we’re going to lose some characters.

With so much death already this season, the question was not who, but how many would die in tonight’s attack by Jon Snow and his undermanned forces on Ramsay Bolton in a desperate attempt to win back his family’s ancestral home.

Let us take the deaths in order, as they fell tonight.

Rickon. We knew his death was coming. It was just a matter of how terrible Ramsay made it on us. And it was terrible indeed.

The battle does not go well. As Sansa foretold, Jon Snow walks right into Ramsay’s trap.

Jon gets buried in the pile of the dead, and for a moment we think he will die, too. And we think that Smalljon Umber will take out Tormund, but at the last minute, it turns out Tormund’s hard head is the denser of the two, and the traitor Umber goes down. (Ok, so maybe not all the deaths tonight were so tragic.) And hey! Tormund’s survival means there’s still hope for him and Brienne!

After Ramsay retreats to Winterfell, it’s Wun Wun who breaks through the gates….at the cost of his own life.
