Take the Black Podcast—Episode 610—”The Winds of Winter”

Welcome back to another week of Take the BlackWinter is Coming’s official Game of Thrones podcastThis week, we discuss the highs and lows of the Game of Thrones sixth season finale, “The Winds of Winter.” Now, in seasons past, this is where we would say our tearful goodbyes to our loyal listeners…but not so this year!

This year, during the off-season, Take the Black will record each week to discuss the filming locations where actors have been spotted and what we think it means for the story going forward, plus whatever other Game of Thrones-related topics we come up with. So you get to listen to our foul-mouthed shennanigans all year long!

This week’s topics include:

  • That amazing opening sequence, brought to a crescendo by Ramin Djawadi’s hauntingly beautiful score.
  • We all heard Qyburn say something weird to Pycelle, in a weird voice, before he delivered the lines from the epilogue from A Dance with Dragons, but we don’t know what he said, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
  • Cory, first of his name, doesn’t believe that a little boy could shank Lancel Lannister and rob him of the use of his legs, while Arya can get gut-stabbed, fall in filthy water, then heal quickly enough to do parkour and kill the Waif.
  • We all agree that the wildfire explosion was amazing, and symbolic of Cersei’s revenge on everyone who watched her carry out her walk of atonement, right to the bell crashing through the streets and killing commoners.
  • At the Twins, Jaime dropped the mic on old Walder Frey, and I instantly knew Arya was there.
  • It was beautiful to see Arya kill Walder Frey, and a nice nod to book-readers that she cooked his own sons into a pie and fed it to him beforehand. Together with appearances by Lyanna Mormont and Lord Wyman Manderly, book-readers got a lot to chew on this week.
  • Isis thinks Ramin Djawadi should have played Boyz II Men when Dany broke up with Daario.
  • Jon made the right decision by sending Melisandre away. Ned would have beheaded her. Perhaps his children are learning, because later Sansa says, “Only a fool would trust Littlefinger.”
  • Will Sansa marry Littlefinger, or will she find love elsewhere?
  • Bran had his last weirwood dream of the season, and it was a doozy. Yes, R+L does, in fact, = J.
  • What’s the best way to make Dorne fun again? Put the Queen of Thorns in it, and have her tell everyone to shut up.
  • Jon was proclaimed the White Wolf and the King in the North, and we got full-body chills.
  • Cersei proclaimed herself Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, and Jaime didn’t look too happy…but really, only one or two of those kingdoms might be loyal to her.
  • And finally, Dany is sailing home with her massive fleet and humongous dragons.

As usual, Take the Black leans a tad bit on the NSFW side (beware the F-bombs). Also, beware that there are spoilers in this podcast for the books, although at this point the show has adapted pretty much all of them in some form or another.
