Pre-order the Game of Thrones Season 6 Blu-ray set
By Dan Selcke
The home video release of Game of Thrones Season 6 isn’t out yet, and it probably won’t be out for a long while. But you can now preorder the Blu-ray set off Amazon, and then press your face to the window and wait for the mailman to deliver your package into 2017.
The home video releases adopts the Wall of Faces motif HBO used during its marketing push ahead of the Season 6 premiere. It’s ominous and cool, although I think it’s a little odd that Ned Stark is on the cover but doesn’t appear in the actual season.
Well, Sean Bean as Ned Stark doesn’t appear. Young Ned Stark appears, played by Robert Aramayo…so maybe it’s fine? Whatever, it’s spooky. I didn’t get why the Season 5 home video boxset was gold-colored, either.
But the packaging doesn’t really matter. What matters is what’s inside. We can assume that it has all 10 episodes from the show’s sixth season, and…that’s all we know. More as it breaks.
When will the home video set come out? That’s also up in the air. The Season 1 boxset came out on March 6, 2012; the Season 2 boxset on February 13, 2013; and the Season 3 set on February 18, 2014. The boxset for Season 4 was released on February 17, 2015, and the one for Season 5 on March 15, 2016. So we can expect that the Season 6 boxset will come out in February or March of 2017, although the revelation that Season 7 will premiere later in the year than usual could push that date back.
Also of interest: HBO made Game of Thrones: The Complete Fifth Season available for digital download on August 31, 2015, over six months before the home video release came out. That digital release contained some but not all of the special features that eventually turned up on the home boxset. It may try something similar with the Season 6 set.
