Doctor Who: Classic Doctors Meet Modern Villains in Big Finish Series
By David Hill
Big Finish has done an amazing job of keeping the past of Doctor Who alive by giving previous Doctors new adventures. Now, the past will meet the present as those classic Doctors will meet modern monsters.
With the creatures created since the revival of Doctor Who, it is fun to imagine what it would have been like had some of the classic Doctors met those foes. While, in theory, they would probably have met at least some these beings at some point in their travels through time and space, those adventures were never aired for obvious reasons.
Now, however, such adventures are being released by Big Finish on July 28. In their latest boxed set, Classic Doctors New Monsters, the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Doctors will be facing off against the Judoon, the Sycorax, Time War Sontarans, and the Weeping Angels. These purchases will also come with a downloadable version.
More from Winter is Coming
- For All Mankind finally gives us information in Episode 405, “Goldilocks”
- Watch a stunning VFX breakdown of The Wheel of Time season 2
- Of course Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon) thinks Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen) should rule Westeros
- Confirmed: The Last of Us season 2 will air in 2025
- Final season of Star Trek: Discovery will have “a lot of action, a lot of adventure, a lot of fun”
It will be interesting to see how Big Finish merges the past and the present during these stories. They do a tremendous job in staying with the feel of past Doctors, but introducing these more modern creatures to these adventures could change that dynamic. Just how well will they adjust to seeing these foes?

Likewise, how much will these incarnations know about the challenges which they will be facing? The Doctors of NuWho have learned about their strengths and weaknesses through their own experiences, which the classic Doctors presumably do not have. Will they be entirely foreign beings? And if so, how do the more recent incarnations of the Doctor not recall facing these enemies before?
What is interesting to note is that classic Doctors have been shown to encounter Sontarans, first seen in the Third Doctor story ‘The Time Warrior.’ I suppose that they are technically “new” to the Eighth Doctor, though.
