Will Peter Capaldi be leaving Doctor Who after Series Ten? If Steven Moffat’s expectations are to be trusted, then Capaldi will be around at least through Series Eleven… but then who will write the Twelfth Doctor’s regeneration?
With all of the change surrounding Doctor Who in the past year or so, it is expected that more changes will be coming when Chris Chibnall takes over as the showrunner following Series Ten. One of these anticipated changes involves Peter Capaldi, who has been speculated to possibly be departing the show along with current showrunner Steven Moffat.
However, Moffat has a different opinion. Still quite involved with the planning and writing of Series Ten, he is quoted in Doctor Who Magazine as saying that he does not anticipate writing the regeneration scene for the Twelfth Doctor when the showrunner departs following the 2017 Christmas Special. Instead, to the contrary, he has stated that not only does Capaldi love being the Doctor, but he hopes that the Twelfth Doctor will remain for a long time. In light of this, it is likely that incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall (or at least someone on his team) will be writing the regeneration scene.

Retaining Capaldi would certainly add a level of continuity to Doctor Who in this time of continued transition. He would be a stabilizing figure, someone who had been there before all of the different changes that took place. He could potentially help make the beginning of the Chris Chibnall era a smoother transition, keeping the familiar Doctor to help usher in this new beginning.
It also helps that Capaldi still loves being the Doctor. Even though he has refused to commit to being a part of Series Eleven, despite the reports that he had been asked to remain, that love of the role is apparent. He still delights in interacting with fans and enjoys every moment that he gets to actively be the Doctor. It is obvious that this is his dream role, and one that he may not want to leave for some time to come.
