Jacob Anderson: I woundn’t mind if Grey Worm died

The characters on Game of Thrones aren’t known for their long-term life expectancies; main characters can be killed off just as easily as minor ones, a fact not lost upon Jacob Anderson, who’s played Daenerys trusted lieutenant Grey Worm since Season 3. Playing a guy who’s often on the front lines of battle might appear to increase the odds of death, but Grey Worm and Anderson have managed to keep on fighting (minus one very close call in Season 5). Like many of his co-stars, Anderson told The Sun he has no clue as to Grey Worm’s ultimate fate, as Daenerys sails for the Seven Kingdoms.

"I have no idea what will happen to him – I haven’t had any scripts through yet. It’s all still up in the air."

With Season 7 filming later than usual, it doesn’t appear that any of the cast members have received scripts yet (with one possible exception), so it’s no surprise that Anderson doesn’t know what awaits his character. But he knows he could go at any moment, and isn’t fighting it.

"I’m very glad that I’m not dead yet – it feels like a bit of an honour. But at the same time I don’t think I’d be that upset if I did die, because if there’s any show in the world that you’d want to die on, it would be this one as everyone gets good deaths."

That’s a rather pragmatic view to take, no? On the one hand, if you’re cast on Game of Thrones, it’s understood that any given season could be your last. But as Anderson mentioned, the upside is that when you do go out, you’re likely go out in the most spectacular fashion possible. Want to be eaten by a dragon? Sure. How bout being murdered by a gaggle of children, or blown up in a church? It could happen. But is there a kind of death Anderson wouldn’t want for his character?

"I just wouldn’t want an off-screen death. I just hope he finds some happiness – that’s all I want for this character."

Is that a shot at the deaths of legendary warrior Brynden “Blackfish” Tully or assassin extraordinaire the Waif? Both died off-screen in Season 6’s “No One,” something some fans took issue with. As to Anderson’s desire for Grey Worm to find some level of happiness, we can only hope that involves the steadfast warrior settling down with fellow Daenerys apostle Missandei after the Dragon Queen is safely on the Iron Throne. That being said, dangers are all around, and even if Dany gets what she wants, those pesky White Walkers are lurking just around the corner. We wish you good fortune in the wars to come, Grey Worm.
