Doctor Who: Have We Seen the End of Missy?
By David Hill
With all of the news coming out about Doctor Who lately, there is one name that has been conspicuous by its absence. Will Michelle Gomez return to play Missy this season, or has her time come and gone?
There have been a few brilliant additions to Doctor Who in terms of recurring actors. Seeing characters like Captain Jack, or the Paternoster Gang, appear in an episode almost always means that we will see an instant classic. Just the different interactions — and the differences between such characters and the Doctor — make them memorable.
The same can be said with Michelle Gomez as Missy. As the Doctor’s frenemy, Missy made being psychotic fun once again in a way that we have not seen since River Song was an assassin out to kill the Doctor. Missy knows just what buttons to push, and in driving the Doctor to distraction, has cemented herself as one of the more memorable characters to appear on Doctor Who.

However, her time may be running out. While different rumors have surrounded the show, and we know that Nardole is going to be a recurring character in Series Ten, there has yet to be any news about Missy. Even Gomez herself does not know if she will be making a return, saying “I just don’t know. I mean, I don’t even know if she’s coming back this season to be honest.” This is strangely in contrast with a recent report of her saying otherwise.
If Missy is indeed not returning to Doctor Who — be it in this coming season, or going forward — it would be a tremendous loss for the show. She has added an element that simply would not be there otherwise; a foil that is worthy of the Twelfth Doctor, capable of matching wits with him at any moment. Her ability to confound the Doctor, something that does not happen often, is a highlight of any episode in which she appears.
