SPOILERS: Casting breakdowns for new roles in Game of Thrones Season 7

Before each new Game of Thrones season starts filming, the internet invariably gets its hands on breakdowns of the new roles to be cast that year. It usually happens a little earlier than this, but with Season 7 premiering later than usual, there was a delay. Nevertheless, Watchers on the Wall has got its hands on new descriptions. Here’s the first batch of casting breakdowns for Game of Thrones Season 7.

Caution: SPOILERS

Priest, in his 60s. “He’s a venerable priest with moral authority and gravitas. The show is seeking a white actor, using an RP accent, with characterful face for this part. He’s scheduled to shoot one week, from September 22nd.”

  • RP stands for Received Pronunciation. It’s usually associated with people who are educated, and who use formal speech. In other words, the priest is a fancy man.
  • With so many gods in the world of Game of Thrones, there are a lot of different kinds of priests. With his posh accent, we can see this one being a priest of the Seven in King’s Landing, perhaps as part of Cersei’s attempts to reshape the Faith after she blew up the last leader.

Warrior, 35 – 45 years old. “The character is a tough-looking bruiser with the attack skills of a pit bull, and the actor needs to be great at fighting. He has a ‘considerable’ amount of dialogue as well. It’s described as an ‘excellent part for a top-end actor.'” They’re looking for a white actor with a “neutral and non-posh English accent.” The role will shoot through October.

  • Ah, so this is one of the plum roles for the year. Is it a knight? A sellsword? They’re looking for a white actor, so it’s not a Dothraki warrior.

Gate Guard, in his 20s. This character is a “Confident, characterful, straight-talking Northern lad with a great face to play across a very excellent series of scenes.” He needs to have “wit, timing, and charisma.” He’ll film between mid-October and mid-November.

  • We can always use more very excellent scenes. The question is: what gate is this guy guarding? The gate to Winterfell or a gate in the Wall? Or maybe a gate at another Northern castle? Seeing as so many important characters are gathered at Winterfell, my money’s on him being a soldier there.

City Guard, in his 30s. This guy will intercept “a suspicious-looking person on his nightly patrol.” He’s got an RP accent and will shoot for a week in mid-October.

  • Again, the RP accent is usually associated with posh folk, but it also has general connections to southern England. On Game of Thrones, it often denotes characters from King’s Landing. “City Guard” also sounds like “City Watch,” so we’re betting that’s where this guy is stationed. As for the suspicious-looking person he intercepts, while it’s impossible to know for sure, we wouldn’t be surprised if Arya tried to sneak into the Red Keep and cross another name off her list.

Merchant, in his 40s. HBO wants a character actor for this part. He’ll appear at an inn (the ubiquitous Inn at the Crossroads?) during a busy evening. They’re open on his race and appearance. He’ll shoot scenes during the first week of November.

  • As Watchers points out, if the producers don’t care about race, the character probably isn’t from Westeros, as the great majority of the people there are white. Then again, it’s not certain. The guy could be from Dorne, for example. He also may be from Essos. Perhaps Jorah runs into him while searching for a cure to greyscale?

Lovely Lady. No age range is provided, but the role is described as “an attractive young courtesan who is sure of her own mind.” The role is a “good speaking part.” Again, the production is open regarding race and ethnicity. She’ll shoot for a week in early October. Oh, and the part requires full nudity.

  • It’s a shame that the only female role on the list calls for full nudity, but this is Game of Thrones. The notes about race and ethnicity from above apply.

Young Lord, in his late 20s. This guy is a tall, handsome young lord. The producers want a white actor with an RP accent. He’s shoot scenes starting September 20th.

  • Okay, this is one character whose identity I can actually try and guess. The RP accent places him in King’s Landing, and the notes about him being tall, handsome, and in his late 20s makes me wonder if this is Aurane Waters, the young scoundrel that Cersei foolishly makes Master of Ships in A Feast for Crows. True, Waters is a bastard, not a lord, but the show could change that. Or it could be someone entirely different.

Lieutenant, in his 20s. The lieutenant is “an athletic, physically fit, and disciplined warrior.” The producers want someone who isn’t white. It sounds like they’d prefer someone of Middle Eastern descent. He’ll shoot for several days across three weeks between mid-September and mid-November.

  • A non-white physically fit warrior? Sounds like a member of the Dothraki to me. Based on the number of days he’s working, he may be a new member of Daenerys’ inner circle, perhaps her main contact among her Dothraki soldiers.

Now that the show has officially outpaced the books in every way, it’s hard to make specific guesses about who exactly these characters are. But that shouldn’t stop us from trying. Bring on Game of Thrones Season 7, and speculate away!
