Class showrunner Patrick Ness reveals more regarding the premise of the Doctor Who spin-off.
In an interview with John Nugent of Empire, Patrick Ness — the showrunner of the upcoming Doctor Who spin-off Class — gives a little more insight into the premise of the show which will premiere on BBC 3 in October. He notes that, since Coal Hill School has been around since the very first episode of Doctor Who — and has been the setting for lots of timey wimey and spacey wacey action — it has naturally caused some “problems.” At the school, “the boundaries of space-time have been stretched” and “ordinary kids” are forced to “deal with extraterrestrial threats and A-level revision.”
As Huw Fullerton of Radio Times points out in an article from today, this is a basic concept that has been previously seen in the Whoniverse. Not only was it part of a storyline from Series Five, but was also a major facet of the premise of the spin-off Torchwood.

Ness elaborates that, unlike Doctor Who and its other spin-offs, none of the main characters on Class are “chosen ones.” Instead, they are simply at the mercy of “happenstance.” He feels that examining how they react to these events, in the context of their otherwise mundane lives, is what will make the show both interesting and unlike any other show in the larger franchise.
Despite focusing largely on teenagers, Ness notes that Class will be similar to Buffy the Vampire Slayer when it comes to its mass appeal to an adult audience.
