Doctor Who: Steven Moffat on Matt Lucas’ Desire to Return as Nardole

According to Steven Moffat, Matt Lucas played a major part in the decision to bring Nardole back to — and make him a regular on — Doctor Who.

Yesterday, we shared an article discussing a recent crop of interviews with the alumni of Doctor Who and Torchwood. These interviews included questions regarding whether or not each respective actor would hypothetically like to reprise their role on screen in the Whoniverse. As is to be expected, answers varied. Today, Den of Geek posted an article discussing an interview in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine with showrunner Steven Moffat.

The topic was regarding Nardole (Matt Lucas) and why the decision was made to bring him back — and in a major way, at that. Moffat was impressed with Lucas’ enthusiasm about Doctor Who, as evidenced in a communication from the actor. He expressed that he wanted to return to Cardiff to work on the show, despite being a hot item in the world of Los Angeles show business.

And, so, Moffat granted the wish of someone whom he considers to be of his “kind” because he “belongs to [their] world.” The showrunner notes that one strength that Lucas brings to the show is “the best comic timing [he has] ever seen” — and we will be able to enjoy it going forward “on a regular basis,” at least for Series Ten. We get the sense, though, that there will be more to his character than simply excellent comic relief.

Of course, there is still a lot of mystery surrounding Nardole’s return to Doctor Who, as we discussed in an article back in June. It is more exciting if such secrets are not revealed until they unfold on the show, though.
